Newbie Wanting To Get Started. Need A Little Help On Where To Begin.

Recommended Posts

Welcome to TU. There are a lot of guys on here that will help you out. All you have to do is ask and post your questions. I mainly make jigs. So I will start this off by giving you my fluid bed instructions. PM me your e-mail address, and I'll get them out to you. It's easy to build if you are somewhat handy.

I'm not what not somewhat handy and built a fluid bed with Cadman's instructions.  If you don't know what type of jigs you want to make, I suggest you go to the Do-It site and have a look at their molds.  Once you decide on the type you can purchase from them or many other places.  Take a look at fishingskirts.com for skirts, weedguard, skirt tools, etc.  Captain Hooks for hooks.  You'll also need lead and a way to melt it.  I like the Lee pots with the bottom pour spout.

All good advice from some of the best here, I will only add to figure out what jig you fish or would fish the most then look at the molds in that catagory some molds have many options such as hook size, eye orientation, weed guards and the like that will give you a wider array of options with one mold. I think your going to be fine with your budget I think it's right on point for everything you will need to get started. Good luck and keep the questions coming their all good! Oh and please read the safety advice from the member's here this is a relatively safe hobby but some things need to be understood to keep it safe.

Don't know what melting pot you may get, but between 2 molds, a pot, hooks, powder paint, get a yard sale toaster oven to bake the jigs, (Do NOT use the family oven lol) gloves, tools (Sprue flat cutter, pliers or hemostats to hold the jigs) buy the lead, and anything else I may have forgot, you will be close to that $250 range.

After you get started, you will see you "need" more molds lol.

Cadman. I got the instruction since I work at a hardware store. Most of those items will be easy to come up with. My wife has a old fish tank so that pump be easy. The molds is my next decision. I will be looking through do-it molds and see what I can come up with. Football head and probally a poison head to start of with. Where is the best place to buy lead?

What ever you do don't buy lead from BPS they charge $5/lb plus. It all depends on how much you intend to pour. I buy most of my lead if I can't get it free from Roto-Metals. Check them out on- line, they have very good prices.  On the fish tank pump, if the one you have doesn't push enough air, you will have to get one that has dual ports, something for a 55+ gal aquarium.PM sent
