Light Wire Football

Recommended Posts

It isn't really a light wire but the Mustad 32798 flat eye I use on my football heads works great. I often face clear water and when I'm fishing points in like 12' to 14' of water I use a 1/2oz football head with a 4/0 hook and 12lb copoly  as there isn't a lot of cover so no need for a flipping hook and heavy line. As I said, it isn't light wire but it is standard wire which is light considering what a lot of people use these days, and in an Aberdeen style hook I really like the Eagle Claw L570BP, in the larger sizes it is the L3052. Both are 90 degree light wire hooks but are nasty sharp and are premium black nickel that are as good if not better than the Mustad 32746, very good hooks.

I like a light wire football jig as well.  I currently use the 4/0 for football head.  I've only found it at barlows.  http://www.barlowstackle.com/Eagle-Claw-L2798BP-Jig-Hook-P2633.aspx

Its identical to the Mustad 32798 flat eye but a little lighter diameter. Black nickel and I've been extremely pleased with how sharp they are.

Lure Parts Online ($0.15 ea) has that hook and so does Captain Hook  ($0.11) by the 100.  Thanks for that info.

Much sharper than the new Mustads. Great hook for the shakey heads. The old blue box mustads were great. The new one's not so much.

I use light wire footballs a lot for GYCB hula grubs, and have the 90 degree football mold from Do-It.

I use the Mustad hook that is the same as the Eagle Claw they show for the mold, because it black nickel and salt doesn't affect it.  I've since learned that Eagle Claw makes their hook in a platinum, salt compatible finish, and I'm trying them in the new mold I just ordered.

I was able to make the hook slots fit a 4/0 hook by using a small triangle file, and a sharp bit locked at the right depth in my drill press to mill out the eye holes to fit the slightly larger/longer hook eye.
