Epoxy, Painting.......need Some Advice Please

Recommended Posts

Here is the response I received to the email i sent to rep of the manufacture of Poly Koat if anyone is interested.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the question and your interest in our products.

Now this is my kind of question! I get to answer a lot of questions every day, but very few involve fishing!

I see no reason why the PK-GL-80 wouldn’t work great as a lure finish. It is really hard and scratch resistant, but still has some flexibility, unlike epoxies which can become brittle over time. It is also an extremely fast curing product which would be great for reducing drip or sags.

Polyaspartics are in the “urethane” family. Urethanes are very scratch / chemical resistant, and with only a few exceptions, most are UV stable and non-yellowing. Epoxies on the other hand will quickly yellow when exposed to UV light. You would never want to use any high-build coating like this outside for coating concrete, but lures are a completely different situation. Outdoor concrete constantly moves, expands, contracts, and usually contains high moisture levels… all bad news for high-solids coatings.

You may also want to play around with two other products:

Clemons Super-Poly is also a “urethane”, but it is a polyurea compared to the polyaspartic mentioned above. It is a little softer and flexible than a polyaspartic.  If the baits you build are wood, then this might reduce cracking in the finish when I smash them repeatedly against rip-rap.

The other is Atomic-Top-Coat. My favorite coating on earth. This stuff is the hardest and most scratch/chemical resistant coating I have ever tested. I use it on all my jig and spinnerbait heads. Of course that’s not what it is designed for, but it doubles the life of the paint. It is also water-thin and sprays like a dream with an HVLP gun. It’s also a great way to boost performance of other coatings like the Super-Poly and Poly-Koat. Once your poly product has cured, simply shoot it with a super thin coat of ATC and you can dramatically boost the durability of the already awesome finish.

Let me know if you ever need any help with field testing. I can personally guarantee we have the best lure coating customer service you will find! Do you have any pics of your baits online?

Thanks again,
