Matt M
I recently was given an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur fishing reel. I am considering painting it a "custom" color. Is Createx paint okay to use for this? Any recommendations on a clear coat? Any tips or experience are welcome. Matt
mark poulson
Matt, look here: http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/index.php?/gallery/category/7-rods-n-reels/ There are people there who have done it already.
gone2long
Wicked or auto air would be fine the most important thing is prep and a quality clear coat like a 2 part automotive clear. I've also seen powder coated reels although I'm not familiar with the model your doing and if that's an option.
Matt M
Thanks guys. Mark, the first picture in the link you sent is my finished product. I added the picture this morning. Gon2Long, I used my Createx paint process I use on my crank baits. I was very careful not to put any D2T on anything that moved. The reel looks okay, but works better than it did. Thanks for the reply guys.

mark poulson
Matt, Your reel looks really good. How long did it take you, start to finish?
Matt M
Thanks mark, it took about three days. I would work on it when I got home from work.
Fishhead15
I couple of the pics in the link were ones I did recently, both curados. I clearcoated them both with solarez polyester gloss resin. I was afraid devcon was going to be too thick. I am pretty happy with the results so far, but the reels haven't seen much action yet. I am looking at trying another product soon that I read about, called spraymax 2k. it is a 2 part automotive clear coat that comes in a spray can and it mixes once you "activate" the can. I think you have to use the whole can within 24 hours of activation...
gone2long
That is correct it does have a pot life just have as many baits, reels and what ever else isn't nailed down ready and clear away
Matt M
Specs on their website says 24 hr pot life. And you need a respirator while spraying that stuff. It looks like a good choice.
Hooklineandsinker
I am also interested in the clear coat. I have painted a couple reels (createx) which turned out very nice. However, I used automotive clear coat in a rattle can and after a season of fishing, the finish became gummy at wear areas and the finish and paint came off in those areas. I was told my a guy that owns a body shop that all rattle can clear coat is susceptible to heat from the sun and will become gummy. I read the answer about the 2 part clear coat. How is it applied? Matt M
I brushed the d2t clear coat on. It goes on with the consistency of maple syrup. The brush marks level out as it sets and cures. Just make sure you don't get the stuff on any parts that need to move. As far as wear or gumming up. I haven't had alot of time to test it. I have an infant and he's been cutting into my fishing time. The d2t dries very hard.
