gone2long
Sure looks like vegetable netting to me then painted in layers.
Bassin901
So what he did was paint base. Use netting. Paint another layer. Use netting and etc to get desired effect. Am I correct? I am a beginner but would like to know how. I am no where near this level yet. Just started to paint. I want to learn different techniques thats all. gone2long
Looks like yellow base, green around the eye/gill plate then masked the white then the bars. He looks like he repositioned the netting though not sure at what layer but if you have 2 brushes you don't need to remove the netting, That's how I see it. Check out lee butz video's on youtube he made these netting holders that the larger production companies even use it looks like a tuning fork and really helps when your doing mask work, also if you don't have them yet get yourself some helping hands from harbor freight they are cheap ($2-$3) and are a very versatile tool to hold you work freeing your hands up. mark poulson
I've done similar scaling, but not exactly the same, by doing my base colors, including contrasting colors where the stripes will eventually go (like the gold in your picture) and then putting tulle over the lure, followed by a second scale material from avocado netting. By pulling both layers tight you can get that effect. That is a beautiful paint job.
RayburnGuy
If you want your scale pattern to show different colors then just paint the appropriate color in the area you want each color to show. Then apply the netting and finish painting. An example would be if you wanted the scale pattern to be red, white and blue. Paint the head red. The middle of the body blue and the tail white. Now apply the netting and finish painting the desired color scheme. When you remove the netting the scales will be red, white and blue. Bassin901
Ok. Now I see how it is done. May need to practice this technique. I just like the fact that there are no sharp lines and everything sort of blends in.

Musky Glenn
That paint job is better than anything I do but it looks like a simpler pattern to me. Base coat of green on head and char on rear. The scales look like they were done at the same time by using a double layer of netting just off set. Then all the beautiful fading takes place. Love those eyes. Musky Glenn
Bassin901
My first attempt at bluegill. Yea, was having problems with my airbrush. It was a syphon feed. Just got a new airbrush so hopefully it gets better.
Captaing
I've done a few like this.....lay your colors....put two different nets over the bait.....lay your next layer.....take off one net.....stripe it or place more color.....remove last net.....finish it....you'll just have to experiment but it can make some awesome results.
