gdowney
Thanks everyone I'm learning a lot. I never checked the temperature either. I set mine on 8 or 9. I will try and find some kind of probe for it. I use to make plastic baits and I know some guys put a thermostat on their Lee pots for plastic to keep the temp where they needed it. Kasilofchrisn
I use a regular lead thermometer that goes to 1,000*f and it works good. Like I said I built a bracket out of angle iron that holds it in the pot on the side out of the way. Also your wax should be burning when you flux. If not light it on fire. the burning is part of what brings out the dross from your lead. If the wax just smokes your not fluxing properly.
BLT
When I rough melt the wheel weights with the soft lead, I do it outside, and in a large cast iron pot. Atleast 50#s at a time. When I toss the wax in, it doesn't always catch fire right away, so I use my long handled ladle to stir it. Man am I glad the thing has a 2 foot long handle lol. I pops on fire then.
