Harbor Freight Powder

Recommended Posts

I got a pound to try, and will never do it again. It is the only white powder I have used that I have the dreaded volcanos with. What a mess! Maybe the protec is worth the extra money after all.

Is everyone happy with the "Powder by the pound" site? May have to try that.

I have had good luck with the Harbor freight white. I just did 100 4oz jigs in it in my fluid bed with out any issues. They have since decided they can no longer ship it to me in Alaska.

Then I found another source of white I am going to try next time I need some.http://cadmansjigs.weebly.com/powder-paint.html

He is a forum member and a world class jig maker.

I use it and it isn't the best. I used 4 oz of powder in my fluid bed but got volcanoes. If I take some out I think I'll get better results.

Thats weird I was doing bigger jigs and didn't have problems. I had at least 6 oz in a 8" tall 2" diameter cup and didn't have volcano problems.

It isn't perfect but I certainly don't have trouble using it.

For all you guys that use white powder paint, I have talked to a chemist, and this has been ongoing for me for 5+ years. Every white I have tried has its issues. I have not yet found a white that will flow smoothly and boil nicely in a fluid bed. White from my experience of trying 30 plus brands is hard to work with some work better than others. Depending on the seasons as well, it seems to absorb moisture faster, it is heavier then some of the powders I've tried, and unfortunately in a fluid bed, sometimes it will boil nicely and other times I get volcanoes. With that said, I really don't have a perfect solution. I have had my white powder paint custom blended to what I like. It works for me, can't say it will work for you.  I have tried cutting it with pearl powder paint and then super clear. Pearl didn't do anything, and super clear thinned it some, but I seemed to have lost some opaque pigment color. So now I go back to using it straight from the manufacturer, and deal with it on a day by day basis. For me white is one of my daily challenges.

I'm using a 5" cup and it didn't seem to matter how full it was. I also mix with pearl, and some times for the plain white I add extra ultra clear.

I mentioned that I was using white from Pro Tec....that was false. I have been using white from Eastwood car catalog because I get it at a discount, along with the ultra clear.  Never had issues with it.  When I was scopping it out of the plastic jar, I thought it was heavy compared to my other whiter.

Most times, pink is my issue, but I only use white in the fluid bed anymore, and use the brush for the other colors.

Don't throw it away, give it to me as I solved the horrible "white problem" that has plagued us all. Go to powder by the pound or Columbia or where ever you want and get a pound of gloss clear, when you put the whit in the fluid bed mix the gloss clear to it, about 60% white, 40% gloss clear and take a dowel or spoon and mix it up and then turn the fluid bed on. What you'll notice is it will now fluidize 100% better and it works the same for every color, green pumpkin is another color that is dense and doesn't fluidize well but add clear to it and it works great. Adding clear also stretches your color without washing out, I needed watermelon real bad, I had maybe a tablespoon left and had 10 jigs to do and they had to be done that day and so I went to Cabelas and they didn't have that color so I added a tablespoon of clear to my watermelon, this gave me enough that I could do the 1/8oz jigs I needed and best of all the color stayed, it didn't get washed out and ever since then I try to keep it on hand, give it a try, it will help out the powder.

Call Component Systems and purchase some fluff or fluffy. All my powder paints boil and flow evenly . Start w/ a 75%powder paint/25% fluffy mix and and more fluffy as necessary

I never have a problem with volcanos from harbor freight unless I've let some moisture get in it.

It was from a just opened, brand new plastic jar from them.  Maybe they left the moisture in, but it wasn't me.

As mentioned, I already do mix with the clear powder. Mixed it even more to try to help, nada. Maybe I just got a bad batch.....always possible.
