Double Titanium Weed Guard

Recommended Posts

Just read the post titled Double Weed Guard a few days ago and decided to take a stab at making one with Titanium wire weed guards. I have made it in a 1/2 oz and a 3/8oz football jig. I molded the jig with the pin in the mold so there would be no hole in the head. after removing jig from mold and trimming it up, I put it under the drill press and drilled a 1/16 inch hole where the weed guard would have been. First popping it with a spring loaded center punch made this job much easier as it kept the bit from wandering. I then powdered coated and baked it. After cleaning out the hole, I took some 40 lbd. test solid titanium wire and cut two pieces off it, each piece was 1 and 5/8 inch long. next I used a thin pair of long nosed pliers and bent a v shaped hook in one end of each piece. Actually I could only get a 90º bend out of it and i used a pair of pliers to finish the v. just guessing i would say that I bent back about 1/16 inch of the wire After pushing them in the hole, you want the short end of the V's to be slightly inside the lip of the hole so that they will dig in to the side of the hole and help to keep the wire from coming out.I pushed both in at the same time. I put a piece of painters tape around the middle of my two wires so that they would stay together and both exit the hole in the same direction. Next, I glued them in using. the loctite gel super glue. after the glue dried, I removed the blue painters tape and spread the wires apart. I had to bend them hard against the jig  head to get the titanium wires to stay apart. I have made wire guards before but never with titanium wire. I think this will not get bent and distorted like the spring wire stainless wire does. I will put a couple of pics in the gallery so you can see what i am talking about. Hope this helps some one.

I think you will be impressed with it. I used the 40lb test for my weed guards.

Today I molded a few with the weed guard inserted by using a spinnerbait skirt collar, they turned out pretty well. I will try to get a pic posted of them tomorrow.

Good luck with your endeavours.
