psilvers
Does anyone know of a GOOD, shiny, powder paint in chrome that I could use? Thanks, Pete
cadman
Pete, If you are looking for chrome like a car bumper, than you only have (2) options. Get it bright nickel plated or just clear coat over your newly poured shiny lead head. If you want a glossy silvery color, Pro-Tec silver looks pretty good or Caswell's Extreme Chrome. But the last two mentioned are glossy silver and do not look like real chrome. Edited April 13, 2014 by cadman
toadfrog
I have tried all over the globe . As far as I know no American mfg. are making the type with Nano technology . Which is very near gold and silver as well as many other colors . It is against American law for a country other than the U.S. to ship powders here according to my last conversation . I give up . smalljaw
I heard a lot of good reviews on the new pro-tec chrome but I haven't got a look at it yet, my thing is the alewive color, that looks interesting.
Kasilofchrisn
I use the Protec Chrome. I really like it though I do realize it is not a true Chrome. I will see if I have a pic of a jig painted with it. My favorite new way to use it is to do a base coat then do the belly in Chrome with the powder paint airbrush. Makes for some awsome looking jigs. I did find that clear coating over the Chrome with clear or UV blast really dulls it and makes it more of a dull gray color. Another option you have is Foiling the jig. I have used Ducting foil in the past but recently bought some Heat stamp holographic foil to try.
Kasilofchrisn
Ok here is a picture of the Chrome. These are small jigs for me but are 1oz and 2 oz.
Kasilofchrisn
And here are some with the Chrome belly done with the powder paint airbrush. The bottom two are chrome over white with the airbrush then there are some with just the Chrome bellies and the top two have no chrome on them. As you can see with the blue one there is one without the chrome belly and one with it.These are 8 oz jigs.
cadman
Wow, those are very nice. I like the clean paint job and smooth transitions. You take a lot of pride in your work?

Thanks that means a lot coming from a master jig maker such as yourself. I truly am having fun with the powder paint airbrushes. I have 2 hooked up right now but can see the need for a third for certain applications. The chrome over the base coats sure does look good though and I plan on selling a lot of those. BLT
How do you deal with the over spray? Did you build a box with a fan? I have the air brush, but still have only used it 2 times.
smalljaw
How do you deal with the over spray? Did you build a box with a fan? I have the air brush, but still have only used it 2 times. I have a box from a pair of work boots that serves as a nice boot, I attach a plastic grocery bag to the back of the box by homemade clips I made from paper clips. What I do is if I'm doing say 20 spinnerbaits and they all have a white belly, I'll hang the bag on the back of the box and spray the belly of all the baits white. Once the white is done, I take the bag out and add another for the next color I'm going to do and then just repeat. After my baits are finished I take the bags and empty the over spray back into the containers. There are times when I have only 3 or 4 baits and I'll do them without the bag, I just let the overspray hit the back of the box and fall, that stuff gets put into a separate container and when I get a lot of it I blend it and see what kind of color comes out. I know some guys make a booth out of a box and they put a hole in the corner and insert the hose from a shop-vac in it and turn it on while spraying and it will eliminate dust the best but it makes it a pain to reclaim but I assume those who do it that way aren't reclaiming the powder. The jigs do look really good and it shows that you have the hang of it and that is the best way to learn, mess with air pressures and the distance from the sprayer to the jig, it is really cool to how it works and the saltwater jigs of Kasilofchrisn are top notch and they look as if they have been air brushed, I'd be proud of those myself!! Anglinarcher
I almost did not post here, so I will just ask up front for your understanding and forgiveness. I love the jigs, and the colors, but ...... NOT CHROME. This is kind of a sore spot with me because I want a true chrome sooooo very bad. In the middle 80's I read an article about how chrome took on an almost translucent look underwater, but also created one of the strongest flashes. I purchased every lure I could find that claimed to be chrome colored, and some actually were. I found that the true chrome were awesome fish catchers in many many different conditions. In fact, it became one of my favorite colors. Just recently I had a fishing condition where the water had only about a foot of visibility, and it was cold. The chrome was the only color that would work that day. Polished silver did not work, silver painted lures did not work, polished or silver lures, clear coated, did not work; if you were not fishing chrome, you were just washing lures one cast at a time. I have looked for chrome options now for some time, and there are some expensive kits for auto restoration that do not require the expensive and dangerous chemicals, but they are very expensive, and most are from Europe so I don't know if they are importable. I think that maybe some are because one of them was shown on YouTube by Jay Leno. Again, I love the jigs, would like to have a few done by you myself, but ............. I sure wish the chrome thing could be solved.
cadman
Anglinarcher, Talking to a chemist, you can not put bright nickel in powder paint. The color is always subdued. Now you can get them chrome plated, but the cost is very expensive. I will never say never, but currently I have not found the perfect chromed in powder paint, So your only choice is plating. Anglinarcher
Cadman, unfortunately I guess that is my point. psilvers started the thread and I just wanted to point out that, well I will refer to your post. Thanks for the clarification.
Kasilofchrisn
I understand the issues with Chrome powder VS a True Chrome plating. I too would love a cheap way to do true chrome. But since there currently isn't one I will do the best i can with the paints I have available. I do plan on trying some Heat Seal Holographic Foil on some jigs and that will probably be a lot shinier than the Chrome Powder paint. toadfrog
It is possible to plate your jigs at home . Fairly cheaply . YouTube has several videos on plating . You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that you can plate color from . The good thing is it is easy to get locally no matter where you live . Lefty's Lure Co.
If you want a shiny chrome look just use lead babbit depending on grade i like using high speed lead babbit it stays shiny and wont discolor after a few time in the water. Its fairly easy too get there are several companys that carry lead babbit

You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that you can plate color from . The good thing is it is easy to get locally no matter where you live . I have thought about trying that. The problem i have is if it works and i get some cool looking jigs out of it I will have customers beating down my door to buy them. It would be cool to have a few for my personal use but for me it would be nice to find a way to make it feasible to make enough to sell. Thats why i am trying the heat set holographic foil. I think it will be am awsome look that I should be able to replicate fairly easily if it works.

psilvers
Kasilofchrisn What kind is your heated press and where did you get it? Kasilofchrisn
Kasilofchrisn What kind is your heated press and where did you get it? I don't have a heated press. There are other ways to apply this stuff like using the heat set powder. So my plan is to apply spray glue (or maybe some embossing ink that my mom has) then apply the heat set powder. After removing excess powder you heat it up with a heat gun then apply the foil. I am looking at several different ways of applying the foil and when I find one that works I'll post a report about it. Kasilofchrisn
If the plan i have doesnt work I might just order a Panther Press hobby heat press. Does items up to 1.5" thick and has a 9" x 12" pad that goes up to 400*. I found it online for ~$280 plus shipping. Kind of sucks one place had free shipping but AK was not included. I make a lot of slab jigs that should work with this process and as of now the longest one is only about 10.5 inches long and 1.15 inches thick so the pad should be plenty big enough.
