Recreating Baits Of The Past

Recommended Posts

This will be my first attempt at recreating a bait from the past. I found the picture in a book about old/antique lures. It was made by the Florida Artificial Bait
Company, St Augustine Florida. It was referenced in the 1940 edition of the Von
Lengerke and Antoine Sporting Goods catalog.

It was five inches long, made of celluloid with eight sections.

I will make the bait out of fiberglass. Any suggestions, hints or tips will be appreciated.

Seeking 56, you have helped me a lot and now you have done it again. Good idea to use heat shaped Lexan. Thanks for the tip, I will do just to make the plug parts. I will make a mold of the Lexan plug parts and then produce fiberglass copies. And, yes I will post it when I am done.

Now I have to get off of this great Forum and get to work...

Here is Part #1 with the finished Part #2.

The first photo shows Part #2 in the up position and the second shows it in the articulated down position.

Neither part is paint ready or attached.

I have yet to decide the best way to attach all of the segments. Any ideas?

I would tend to use rivets , but the kind , that you'd beat down the head with a hammer , ....pop rivets would tighten up too much and render the bond not to be moving anymore , ........also they'd expand too much in diameter and possibly crack up the material .

The rivet heads do not have to be to massive anyway , as in this case they'd only prevent the rivet shank from sliding out of it's bores and do not serve the purpose of bonding two sheet parts together , ......in fact the rivet shank has to be a little thinner than the bore to enable the desired play of the joint .

There is a download of mine here dealing on sheet metal hinges for larger swimbaits , by the the end of the tutorial there are some passages and pictures about similar rivets connecting those hinges , .....maybe you could adapt the principle for your own purposes ?

Good luck , Dieter :yay:

Here is another oldy goldy from Minnesota they used to make them the size of a soup can top... perhaps Dieter can make one up to show us how its done lol They were advertised in midwest outdoors years and years ago as the illegal legal lure they were selling the small nickel size versions as collectibles I still have one somewhere but can't find it at the moment they have really interesting action in the water.

Interesting concept of a spoon(is it really one :?) , ........looks like just a cupped disc to me .

Would love to try my hands on one some day , since I consider myself to be a bit crazy about spoon lures  , but sadly the picture does not provide any insight on either material thickness and especially the grade of cupping , ....which I believe to be very important for proper function .

I would assume , that the sheet thickness would be rather thick , maybe 1/16" with this 2" dia. model , .....also I wonder about the purpose of the center hole , ......do you know any particular  model name , so that I could possibly do a web research ?

The making itself should not be a big problem , at least not with such 2" dia. discs , .......smaller ones would get constantly more finacky to shape with a ball peen hammer .

I have only ever seen one bigger one 2in might have bigger even... it was at least 1mil I would (daredevil thickness) They were made from brass, copper, and nickel coated brass... the hole in the middle was to create a bubble affect when you jigged it vs casting it... they claimed you could use them for everything... I used my nickel coin sized ones for ice fishing vertical jigging and had good success... here is an article from Field and Stream with info and a link to old packaging... as far as the dish goes in the middle the bigger one had 2-4mil depth from the rim if that makes sense and the nickle size ones had about 2-3mil... I have just started using mils since most the drawings online are in metric. Good luck if you make one and hope there is a video to go with it ;-)

Came across that link as well just googling "canadian bait inc" straight after having submitted my previous post , .....looks like there is not much more to be found on a short term .

Anyway , .....your further info should be enough so far to get going on a first 2" prototype , .....thanks a lot for these specs , .....got some 1 ounce "Daredevles" to take the thickness from .

Guess , I'd have a chance to grind and pound some to shape coming weekend shift at work .

Thanks again for info :worship: , ........greetz , Dieter :yay:

YES, when Griffond posted the "oldy goldy from Minnesota" I was happy. I hoped some members would take-up the challenge of recreating baits of the past.

I could make a few oldy goldies from Minnesota in a few minutes from fiberglass but, that wouldn't be recreating would it...

P.S. Not everyone knows this, the goldy from Minnesota actually caused the flying saucer scare of 1953...

To funny Saltwater.... when I get a chance to go up to my mother's house in a couple weeks I have a whole stringer of old vintage lures hanging on the wall even one my great grandfather made for Musky in the 1900's I will take some pics and post them up on here with as best of dimensions as I can and also see if I can find the lure I have above even if it is nickel size... also guys in Little Falls MN there is a fishing museum that has tons of old lures and I am guessing the old guy that runs it would probably have one of the big ones I might be able to measure up I will have to call him or stop in and ask.

Would be great if you could make it , ......though not being a collector(unwilling to afford the hobby) , I've ever been interested in vintage fishing lures , ......since so many of them differ to our modern stuff too much in their design , often even are pretty much peculiar .

Some models are quite easy to reproduce for the lure hobbyist and some have even passed the test of time being alltime great catchers still commercially available to this day .

And since nobody around here uses such lures anymore , they are unknown to the pike in our local often heavily pressured waters thus providing somekinda advantage , too .

At least I have caught quite a few fish on my homemade vintage lure replics and I would hardly cut out on trying to reproduce an interesting vintage lure model .

As far as for the "Doctor Spoon" , ........I have one swapped from the US , ........some more info and personal opinions from 13:09 until 15:03 in this video of mine :

I have made two replics of the Finnish version "Professor Spoon" before , haven't fished them a lot so far , .......compared to other spoon models I find it more elaborate and time consuming to shape the little tail fin portion of this spoon model .

All those spoons in that video and you miss the best one of them all! a Johnson Silver Minnow lol

I have only one or two of these , pretty much unknown over here !

Haven't cast them much , so I can't tell much about them , .....in fact I've never caught a fish on a Johnson, .....simply because I've hardly tied them on so far  .

.........hope you've enjoyed the beer !

I've never made sucha bottletop lure before , ...too light in weight for my taste ,...will post my own version later , into an Ebay auction for a Heddon  right now !

......alright , .......here is my own version , ......2" dia , had some 1,5 mm copper sheet laying around , easier to work down than stainless steel ,  ...used a small airgun pellet tin can as a template to drive around with my marker needle .

The dome turned out to be 6mm high from the outer rim to the highest point opposite , hopefully this won't make up for a cupping too deep(if neccessary , I could still beat it a little more flat , I guess) ?

DSCI0002-001.JPG

Tomorrow I'd do an initial test run in the bath tub , also gonna try the action without an attachement swivel and also gonna take a dressed treble from another spoon to test with this one .

If I should be OK with the action , I'm going to disassemble the hardware again to have the spoon polished and decorated with reflective foil , ........or just painted , dunno yet ?

Greetz , Dieter :yay:

PS : Won the auctions , two more Heddons and one Lucky Craft for my lure armory :) !

Sorry , I did not take it as a joke , since as far as I'm concerned , there is someone around selling such lures(or very similar ones made from bottle tops) on the internet , ...if my memory serves me right , he even has his own website , there are YouTube vids as well .
