BobP
VMC is popular and they sell at a lower price than "premium" hooks. But Gamakatsu round bend trebles are the standard hooks I use on baits I fish. They are very sharp and remain sharp longer because of superior tempering. Owner trebles are also a popular premium brand. Many guys like to use short shank trebles so they can up-size hooks on a bait without tangling. VMC and Gamakatsu sell short shank versions of their trebles. Mustad KVD short shank trebles are also popular. Yes, you can mix treble sizes on a single bait with no problem (but I think mixing brands or styles on the same bait looks lame). For me, it is critical to size hooks so they don't tangle or hook over the lip during use. If they do, it's a wasted cast and one cast is often all you get. I keep a variety of brands and sizes on hand and confess that I put mostly VMC's on baits that I give away to friends/family but put Gamakatsus on my personal baits. Nothing wrong with the VMC's ... they just aren't quite as good as the Gamys
rabbittrapper
I would personally use #8 or #10 trebles maybe even #12. #6 is a little big for bass.
BobP
Whoa rabbit! I never use smaller than #8 trebles, which go on tiny 1 5/8" baits. Small bass baits and jerkbaits often carry #6, medium bass baits #4 trebles. There is a definite trend to put the largest trebles you can fit on a bait for bass. Many pros even upsize #4's to #2's on 1/2 oz rattle baits. I don't think I've ever seen a #12 treble hook! Must be some trout fishing deal used by nawtherners

gone2long
I ordered 4's to start I'm putting them on some top waters and have some bigger cranks I got from Predatorbaits and think a slightly heavier hook will hold it down on the surface a bit better if not I'll order some 6's. nedyarb
If you call captain hooks you can order other hooks that are not listed on the site. He sells under shorties also but doesn't have a site
Nathan
Shorty's is the wholesale side of Captain Hooks...You have to be in business to buy from Shorty's and get that pricing...Nathan
nedyarb
You can still buy from shorties, you just don't recieve the tax break.

gone2long
If I understand it correctly you are paying wholesale pricing from shorty's so I guess what he's saying it's you will pay retail if you don't have a tax id?
nedyarb
If you don't have a tax I'd, you pay regular price.
nedyarb
Their site is down.....that's why I was saying to call them. I was told they had a rough time with their website guy. I guess what I'm saying is call them and ask for what your looking for. They will probably have it.
saltshaker
I buy the black nickel trebles from www.unpaintedlures.com. I've used them personally with no issues and have never had a complaint from customers. They're good quality stuff..... .$24 per 100. I like Gamakatsu, too.

ranger461vs
My buddy and I went to get a price on some hooks from Shorty's after giving them the tax id number and the price was higher than ordering from the caption. You pay another tax around10% which made it higher when it was said and done. We are checking with them of threads a mistake.
joetheplumber
Anybody know where to by Gamakatsu EWG treble hooks in bulk? I have a tax ID # if that would help me out. Also are the Trokar treble hooks worth the money? I use the kvd hooks some but I have problems with them breaking. Maybe I'm just to rough....... mark poulson
Excise tax @ 10% So, if I'm understanding this, you pay 10% excise tax when you buy wholesale, and then charge whatever sales tax when you resell as retail. Is that right?
Cougarftd
well, my understanding is if you have a federal tax ID you should get a waiver on the excise tax when you buy and you are supposed to charge the 10% (to the feds) and sales tax (to the state). If you paid the 10% you are not supposed to have to charge it again. This is my understanding but I cannot get a clear answer. My CPA for my business is researching it. If you go to IRS.Gov it is murky as heck (and I really don't want to speak to the IRS if I don't have to)
