Roadkill
I would love to duplicate an "Arbogast Hawaiian Wiggler". Some of you "old" guys like me can probably remember it LOL. I can of course get close but can't get that same head. Any ideas on a similar head or where I might find an old mold. Thanks for any help here. JSC
I have cast them a million miles ... Have never seen a knock off of it .. You could make a mold (or have one made) which model do you want ? they had the #1, 1 1/2, 2 (#3 was spoon) the one of choice for me was the #2 .. sometimes you might break one side and have to smooth it off and file off the other side to match and would run like the #1 1/2 ... In later years I have removed the old blade and replaced it with a colorado but you would have to run the skirt straight instead of the more perfered reversed .. I stil have one or two of them ... gave me something else to do for the day and that is find them. You brought back many memories with that good old bait ... course the old "Sputterfuss" part of the series was the first "Buzz Bait" I used ... the old reels were slow and you really had to wind it up to keep it buzzing but it caught a lot of fish as well. When you were a kid back in those days the Wiggler was one of the cheaper lures (1.10 each) and it saved many a p enny by not getting hung (xcept in the worse occasions like cold water in the fall and you would have to strip down and turn blue getting that baby back). I forget the price of the skirts but they would come ungluded and you had to "Rubber Band" the collar to keep on going .. You carried a trailer hook (generly a small treble with one cut off so that it would ride with the 2 hooks up) along with this we used a piece of leather that was slipped over the main hook to keep the trailer on. Most of my fishin with this bait was in small creeks and ponds ... I could keep on talking about it but I get to "Long Winded" Edited April 29, 2014 by JSC
Roadkill
Hi JSC, you are not to long winded, I love talking about these old lures. That's kinda what I'm doing here. I've started trying to recreate some of the old stuff. They worked then and they work now. If you remove the blade from the "wiggler" and replace it with a Colorado, then you pretty much have a "Snagless Sally" from that era (Which I currently make and sell). Yes, they were cheap relatively speaking I guess. I remember working for other farmers for a grand 40 cents per hour in the hay/tobacco fields. This money was precious and we were careful what we spent it on. Mostly fishing gear, LOL Anyway, been doing this lure making thing for about 15 years and I'm really having fun with this idea of bringing back some of the old stuff. Like you said, the memories are nice too.
JSC
I like the way the #2 wiggler runs with the colorado better than the sally (The Avatar Pic is me landing an 8+ on a sally) this is really Sally Country even now ... Have not seen a wiggler in use for years here in NW FL .. I have sold a lot of both thru the years as a jobber salesman in this area. I ment the Wiggler was cheaper than some of the others that day and time but was a heck of a lot of money for me carrying newspapers and such .. The Sally Came along several Years after the Wiggler .. I think it was in the 50's that Lew Childre talked Allen Hildebrandt into making it .. it was a take off of the wiggler and also the Weighted fly "Yellow Sally" which you attached a spiiner to and hung on a Uncle Josh Frog ... a killer then and now along the tide waters of the Gulf Coast. I guess I could go on & on .. but that is enough for this time
Anglinarcher
I noticed that I could go to eBay and locate several Hawaiian Wigglers. This sure brings back the old days to me for sure, some fine memories taking fishing lures from my dad's tackle box. One could buy the sizes desired, then make a silicone putty mold of the body, then pour your own bodies. Hmmm, got me thinking........ Roadkill
Anglinarcher: Yep, eBay is partly what got me to thinking of trying to build them. All us old dudes used them as a kid and I'm sure they would still work today with no problem. Problem is I have absolutely idea how to make the mold you are talking about. I'm so ignorant I didn't even know you could pour lead into a putty mold. Live & learn. If you decide to make the mold, let me know. I might buy one from you if the price is right LOL!!!
