Starting New Lure Company

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Not trying to endorse product or anything, just want your input on my website. Ive been hand pouring for myself for a few years. Got a couple molds, even some injections, and my friends said I should sell a couple of lures. So I made a website. It is called redzonebaits.webs.com. Obviously, its just a start, and I plan to have lot's more lures added, a youtube channel, facebook page, twitter etc. Just wanted to get a few guys to check it out, make some suggestions. If you see a glaring problem, please let me know

Cool start.  I like the name, and it's very easy to navigate.  I also like the custom line for any additions made.  If I could make a few suggestions, they would be:

1)  Show more pictures of your colors.  For example, personally I'd like to see your frog in a baby bass color, or maybe your finesse worm in red shad.

2)  You mention making the order and shipping the next day.  Speaking from personal experience, as you get more orders, this might be difficult to keep up with.  There were times when I had to tell customers there is a 2 week, one month, etc. turnaround time.

3)  That shipping rate will kill you if you get a large order.  You might want to try the 4.00 for orders up to 25.00, and maybe charge 8.00 for orders of 25 to 40, 12.00 for orders over 40..........something along those lines.  I understand you are trying to get orders to start, but eventually that's something you will definitely want to change.  Most fishermen understand that if you add enough bags together, you'll get some weight there, and they don't mind paying the shipping prices........as long as they aren't paying more than what you paid to ship.

Not trying to play devil's advocate here.  Just being honest with some of those issues that I encountered over the years.  Overall, you've got a nice start-up site, and I'm sure you'll have lots of fun building on it.

Best of luck!!

Thanks alsworms, I was thinking of doing a color chart, or even having it so that when you click on a color, the bait in that color pops up. Might be able to do that if I get orders of all the colors, then I can take a pic of each one. As for shipping the next day, I understand that if it gets popular, it just wont be possible. But as for now, it will work. And as for shipping, your probably right. I just hope to sell a few baits and go from there. Again, thanks for your input, exactly what I needed.

Clicking on the color is a great idea, and it sounds like you've got it down for the future.  Trust me.......as you get more and more into this, you'll have a ball building on the site.  I had more fun working on my site than I ever did pouring baits!  LOL

Hang in there and don't be afraid to shoot questions our way as you go.  :)

When taking your pictures.  Go outside on a sunny/slightly overcast day.  This will allow your colors to "POP" more.   I have some photos on my site that I need to change.  Some are dark and the rest I shot outside.   Best of luck to you.

I've left emails and voice messages for half a dozen companies this week that can make the product, but none have responded. I could have the product shipped out of China on Monday, but I want to support US businesses. I may have to buy the mold myself and start pouring. :?

No, but I have everything else under the sun so I might as well pick the equipment to make these too. The only thing I can't figure out is how to make the tail one color and the body another.

I'll be using these with my line of pike spinners so I'll need a lot of these. It would be nice to be able to make them on demand.

If you plan on hand injecting rather than hand pouring, making the tail different colors is easy. For example, if you wanted a chartreuse tail, all you do is inject the whole bait in chartreuse. After that dries, de mold and cut the body out , just leaving the tail in the mold. That way, when you inject the body, the heat from the liquid plastic will mold the 2 color together.

The tail molds just help speed up production. Most of them are multicavity so that you can inject once and have, say, 4 tails done in one shot. All you would have to do then is put them in your mold and shoot the main color. Just makes it less work. Honestly, if it is just for you, you would not need a tail mold

Yea, it is a nice site. Hope I can get that many products out sooner than later. BTW, did the guys that made caneycreekmolds.com help you design your site? They look identical

No I did it all myself.  Its through 3Dcart.  It was a template.   I choose those colors because it was the only template that mached my color set up.

Ryan, sites looking good. I agree with Alsworms about your shipping prices. You will lose money....1-3 oz with shipping lable purchased online is 1.93. I bet a bag of anyything weighs that much. What I use to do is have 2 prices for plastics. $5 flat rate envelope. You can fit about 10 bags of baits in there. !0.95 for medium flat rate box will will hold allot. When people see the shipping is the same $5 for up to 10 packs, It tends to make them want to buy a few more bags. Just a thought. I never had a single complaint about shipping in several years
