Do It Grass Jig (Swim Jig)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I have been reading posts for quite some time, and appreciate all the information that everyone offers. I have a question regarding the Do It Grass Jig mold. The model of the mold is SMJ-3-SF, and is the mold for 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 oz sizes.

From what I understand, Gamakatsu does not make a 28 degree hook that will fit this mold unless you order a very large lot size directly from the manufacturer. My question is: Can the Gamakatsu 2014 EWG hook be modified (straightened) out from 60 to 28 degrees to work in this mold? Will it fit after modification? I am pretty certain that the hook can be modified, I just wondered if anyone has tried this, and what the results were?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

You have the sizes right. As for bending the 2014, you might be able to but you'll end up with some broken ones. I don't like cutting point hooks in swim jigs of spinnerbaits because the fish almost always hit them from the side and the cutting points in the side of the mouth fall out, I used to use only Gamakatsu and Owner in my spinnerbaits until I found large holes and lost a few fish. The swim jig you asked about uses the same hook that the J-Will swim bait head uses, I haven't had a problem with those hooks. You can try to bend the 2014 but you may end up breaking some, if that happens you can try the 2034, it is heavier wire than the 2014.

I have some 28 degree Gamis that were part of a special run. Also the Mustad 91768 (EWG) hooks will fit in that mold. Like Smalljaw mentioned bending heavier or lighter hooks works sometimes, however I have found that you can bend some and some will break. This tells me that they are not all tempered the same and bending them if they break wastes a lot of hooks. My nephew fishes these jigs exclusively and he loves the head profile and the hooks

Anyway ask Smalljaw if he would run them for you. If he declines or doesn't have time, I can run them for you.

BTW welcome to TU
