joelhains
I have a problem with one of my molds. The flay eye arky mold seems to have a hole in the head when I break off the sprew. It will do this about 75% of the time. It doesn't seem to matter if the mold is cool or hot. I have adjusted the temps on my Lee 10 pound bottom pour pot. It doesn't seem to matter if to matter if I pour from the spout or if I pour from a ladel. My lead is pretty soft and very close to pure from what I can tell. I'm not sure what else to try to fix this issue.
Apdriver
I know this is a tardy reply to your question. I have this mold and have never had the problem you're talking about. Instead of breaking the sprue, I use a sprue cutter, then dress with a file before I powder coat. It's not necessary to dress them but I do. Anglinarcher
Clearly you are getting an air bubble that exposes itself when you break the sprue off. I suspect it is a design flaw that would be difficult to fix and almost impossible to predict. Try Apdriver's approach to see if the air bubble remains hidden. That would be my first approach for sure. Otherwise, I might try to preheat the mold, pour slower to allow the air to escape before it fills, and use a slightly hotter lead. But, definitely try Apdriver's method first.
