NS Basser
I apologize if this is a repost or threaded somewhere else, I could not find any info as to such. What I am wondering is what would be a generally good type of paint to use for beginners on painting crankbaits, swimbaits, etc. all homemade. I am diving into the airbrush world, I think I have found one I would enjoy learning on. Please keep in mind I am in Canada and unfortunately our country makes it super difficult to find quality items such as these. I have heard alot about Createx, also heard about another brand named Golden, just puttin this out there, any help would be appreciated. On seeing Createx website they have airbrush colors, wicked colors, auto air colors, I assume I would want the airbrush colors or would one be somewhat interchangeable with another, i.e: could I use a reddish overlay airbrush color on a flo green wicked color? PM me here, or email: duanesmith@eastlink. Thanks.
Jdeee
Try calling Micheals craft stores in Halifax area to see if they still stock airbrush paints. They use to carry Spectra airbrush paints. They would carry Golden but I am not sure if that would be useable in an airbrush. They do carry lots of cheap acrylic paints that can be thinned to use in an airbrush. They also sell Etex (Evirotex lite) topcoat which can be bought with their 40% off online coupons. NS Basser
Thank you Jdeee, their website says nothing about Spectra type paints, however I do see Golden brand there, I'm just starting out so I wouldnt know if that would be a good alternative whereby I'd have to thin it, don't know that process, or would the same have to be done to Createx. I did see they advert Rit dyes, which if I'm not mistaken you can add to plastisol for dying the plastic. Oh forgot to edit 1st post, email is duanesmith@eastlink.ca Edited July 7, 2014 by NS Basser
BobP
Airbrush paint has pigment that is ground finer than acrylic hobby paint, so it shoots much more uniformly and avoids clogging. The hobby paint is usable if you thin it and shoot it through an airbrush with a large enough tip (I wouldn't go smaller than .035mm). Cheaper yes, but also much more hassle. Createx is the standard high quality a/b paint but they have a rather limited palette of colors. I mix and match Createx, Createx Auto Air, Smith Wildlife, Van Dyke, Polytranspar, etc. Get colors customized for fish from taxidermy supply sites like taxidermy.net. As long as it is acrylic water based paint I have no problem with compatibility. Dry each shot with a hair dryer before adding another color.
