Painter1
I just bought a jig tying machine from stripercandy. It is made from a sewing machine and you may have seen it the classifieds. It looks great but I have never tied a jig in my life. I am excited to learn and have some friends looking forward to trying the end result. I would welcome any suggestions for suppliers, tips and tutorials. Respectfully, Mike
smalljaw
Before you start using the machine you may want to get a bobbin and thread and learn by hand first and then apply what you learned to the machine. Go to you tube and look at videos, I have some videos myself on there under my smalljaw name. For thread some guys like Coats and Clark sewing thread but I prefer Danville flat waxed nylon, it is easier to use, it doesn't dig into itself and it doesn't build up as fast. There are thread sizes, I only use 2 and that is 140 denier and 210 denier, getting thread rated in Denier is easier because it is an industry standard, the "aught" system is not, some manufacturers will make a 3/0 that is equal to a 140 denier while others it will be a 210 denier so stick with denier. If you are making small buck tails for panfish and crappie then you can use 70 to 140 denier thread, if you are tying bass or light saltwater you can use 210 denier, if you are tying for big game 280 or heavy mono would be the way to go. When you get a bobbin, get a ceramic one, they don't get burrs like the steel ones which can weaken or break your thread. I use http://stores.crazyanglertackle.com/ for thread and buck tails because they have the thread I use as a good price, grandpa bobs custom jigs is even cheaper but he is unreliable, you may get your stuff in 3 days or 3 months, he doesn't answer emails or let you know if stuff is backordered, but if you don't mind waiting he is by far the cheapest and because of it he runs out of stuff quick. I pay $1.20 per spool of thread, good price for the kind I use, Grandpa Bob sells it for $0.85 per spool, 35 cents difference but I know I'll have my order within 5 days, my last order from grandpa bob took over 2 months, so I'll pay a little more and know I'll get my stuff in a reasonable time frame. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with, I tie a lot of buck tail jigs as well as other types but most of what I tie is for bass fishing. Painter1
I watched some of your YouTube videos and they are very instructional. I am looking forward to making some jigs and can see that hand tying is what I need to practice.
