brad68
I just recently started pouring baits, they come out good for the most part but.....they seem too soft. Particularly the flukes, I only get 1 or 2 fish out of the bait before the top of it is torn to the point of being useless. So will a hardener solve this problem without affecting the action? Also, what is the best heating pot to maintain the soft plastic in liquid form? I have just been using the microwave but after every reheating cycle my plastic turns 1 shade darker. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Brad
Jig Man
Your softer problem may be hardner settling out of the plastisol. You have to mix mix mix it before use. If not then you need hardner. Also buy some heat stabilizer and use it on remelts. Also remelts do better with short bursts (20, 30, 45) seconds with lots of stirring in between. nedyarb
Shake the plastic for a minute.....then shake it again....then keep shaking! I like to heat my plastic in a microwave and then put it into a presto pot.
MonteSS
What plastic are you using?
brad68
M-F plastic Thanks for the replies guys....................I did NOT shake it very hard so that will be the first where do you live Montess.............im in Midlothian
alsworms
MF should take very little shaking. Are you using the super soft formula?
brad68
Nope, just the standard stuff. The baits turned out great, they just seem to tear easier than store bought baits do. I have read too much hardener will effect the action and i'm trying to avoid that but make it just a little tougher at the same time. Again............thanks for the input. Baitjunkys
Depends on the bait. Softer is not always better. I think stick baits have a more vibrant action in medium vs the linp noodle action in soft.
raimaw
Hi guys, can anyone tell me what is the problem with those bubles (holes)? Thank you.
brad68
In my very limited experience it is from sucking air into the injector when your work pot/cup is low on plastic. When I get to the bottom of the pyrex cup now after I fill the injector I hold the injector tip upwards and press the plunger slowly until I see plastic come out, seems to help..... Brad I always get something similar from shooting a cold mold too fast.
alsworms
I always get something similar from shooting a cold mold too fast. Yeah good point. I did very little injecting, but from I've learned on here that's a common problem, and the solution is usually heat up the molds or inject a hotter plastic. raimaw
Here is the form for my soft bait. Heating up the form didn't solve the problem. Sometimes it was even worse. So, waiting for new comments. Thank you all.
mark poulson
It looks to my unprofessional eye like your mold is very well vented, but that may allow air to be sucked back in as the plastic cools and shrinks. I would try holding the injector under pressure a bit longer, once the cavity is filled, and maybe injecting at a lower temp.
Bassinfool
Try varying your temp. Some of my molds are very particular about what temp the plastic is. Others want to be shot quickly, others slowly. My stick bait mold has to be shot slowly and I hold pressure on the injection for ~15 seconds and then top off the sprue at the end several times to prevent dents. Cub48
The only time i get big bubbles like this is when i am running out of plastic and sucking air into the injector. I have read that sometimes the oring on your tip will let it suck air as you are filling i have had this happen with my home made injector as i don't have an oring on it. It has to have a tight fitting tip i made one that i could remove easier it would not work sucked too much air. If u are trying to suck out the last of the plastic try tilting cup or pot and pull the plastic in slower. I also heat injector on a hot plate pull the plunger back set about half on the injector on hot plate and set the temp low just want to warm it so the plastic don't set as fast. I don't heat my molds as it takes too long before u can take the baits out. If i am shooting big baits i set them in front of a fan so they will cool quicker. Some of the big guys even water cool their molds. Not pulling enough plastic in to fill the molds can cause this also. Cub48
