D2T, More Resin Or More Hardener

Recommended Posts

I don't remember who posted on this topic awhile back, but I know if you use more of one than the other the epoxy will not harden and fully cure. I am buying D2T in the 9 oz bottles, and it looks like I get more hardener than resin. So in a 50/50 mix, can I add more hardener to get the same results, or is it the other way around. I know how to use D2T, so that is not the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm guessing that if you add more hardener than resin, you'll get epoxy that is weaker and yellows much more quickly.  Epoxy is formulated to use equal amounts by volume.  If measured accurately and mixed really thoroughly, that allows the resin and hardener to mix at the molecular level and gives you the best results.  Excess hardener doesn't react with the resin, it just sits in there and yellows quicker.

D2T is formulated to be mixed equal parts by volume.  You should just use 1:1 by volume regardless of the package it comes in.  Mix ratio may be slightly different if you weigh it since the two parts have different specific gravities.  Other epoxies can have different volume ratios, different weight ratios, etc. so you gotta use what's specified for each to get the best results.

Use these syringes, and you'll always be correct:

Drill a tight fitting hole in the top of each component bottle, and push the syringes in their component bottles so they fit snuggly.  The nozzles are tapered, so you can find a bit that makes a tight fit about half way into the cap.  To fill, hold the syringe tight to the cap and turn the bottle upside down.  Now fill the syringe with as much as you need, flip the bottle back over to upright, and remove the syringe and squeeze the component into your mixing container.  Since the syringe only touches one component or the other, it never needs to be cleaned, and you can leave them in the bottle tops when not in use.
