Flipping Jig Molds

Recommended Posts

I need to pour 1/2 and 3/4 sizes.

Do It largest is 1/2.

Hilts makes single cavity molds  in 1/2, 3/4 and larger.

I have never use Hilts molds, until now have been able to get all I needed in Di It.

Anyone use Hilts? How user friendly are they.

Only thing I have to compare them to would be Do It.

Also best place to buy them?

Thanks Again

Curtis B

Curtis,

I have never poured with a Hilts mold, so can't give you any input. However I do have one of there molds, and I will tell you that I do not like the handles. They are very skinny and that makes the mold top heavy. As far as buying Hilts molds. Well, I have tried unsuccessfully to buy molds from them for the last 4 years. Reason why I have not gotten any molds from them, is that everytime I call them they never have the mold I want, and I have to wait for them to do a production run. Well I'm not waiting a year for them to make a production run. I've tried this several times with no luck, so mI gave up. Maybe the mold you are looking for will be in stock, or you might have better luck on e-bay. I believe the company is out of Florida and I do not believe it is the original company.

I own a few hilts molds. Most pour just fine but in my Storm sinker molds the sinkers stick really bad.

I bought the mold then didn't cast from it until after the warranty was up. My mistake for sure as I wish I would have returned them under warranty.

I guess that is something I should do with every new mold. Cast from it right away even if I don't need the castings for awhile.

I think I can fix my bad molds with some emery cloth when I find time.

Their molds are made in California if I remember right. At least thats their home address.

I did one time receive a mold without handles(removed for shipping). The other mold in the box had handles with it. After a couple days of phone tag they sent me a set of handles no charge.

I guess it's your call to either take the risk with Hilts or buy a CNC mold from Shawn collins or CNC molds N stuff. http://www.cncmolds.com/contact.shtml

I would recommend either of these companies. I have used both of them and have always been happy with them. A bit spendier for sure but you get a great mold and it's exactly what you want.

I understand what you are saying Bob.

Sometimes though a person wants a size of an existing jig they cannot find a mold for.

I understand a mold maker not wanting to make an exact copy of a Do-It or Hilts mold. But sometimes you want a size bigger or smaller than what is available in a cheap sandcast mold.

If I had been able to find bigger molds for what I wanted I might not have ordered my molds from you. Boy am I glad I did order them though.

It can also be frustrating to find an old mold on EBAY and sometimes you end up paying more than you really wanted too because someone else wants the same thing.

I once paid close to $100 on EBAY for a do-it mold no longer in production that is a very popular mold.

It took well over 6 months of looking and biding on and loosing one or two other molds before I finally decided to pay what I did and get what I wanted.

I could have most likely had one CNC machined for $150 (it's a fairly simple mold) and had it much sooner.

I have been able to modify do-it molds to fit pins that you can later add weed guards to. Sometimes because I already have a mold in the size I want with no weed guard and just don't want to buy one with. But if you find the size you want with no weed guard, this might be an option. (BTW, I usually just use short pieces of nails for the pins.)

I have several Hilts molds and love them.  I use drop out release aid and no problems.  I cast smaller jigs 1/8 and less so the small handles are not an issue. Dolphins Sports bought the line and I think are dropping it,  Everytime one item goes to zero it stays at zero so they are not replenishing their inventory.

For the Money, Barlows or Zeiners sell Do-It molds at a lower price than a comparable Hilts if you can find it.  Ebay still has hilts molds popping up but you gotta watch the price.

The other suggestion is Lil Mac molds lots of those in larger sizes and with weedguards. Only problem is most are single cavity molds.
