joelhains
I use MF plastic and MF scented worm oil. My question is: Is it more effective to put the worm oil right into the plastic or in the bag after the worms are packed? I have just been adding it to the bag but I've noticed over a few weeks it loses its scent. I only add a few drops to a bag of 6-12 baits...do I just need to add more? Thanks! alsworms
This is really a preference thing, but I found for me what worked best was adding scent directly into the plastic just before it's ready to pour. I have some old bags that were poured years ago, and I can can still clearly smell the scents in them. I never understood adding scent to the bag. Once it hits the water, it's gone anyway, right? I always thought it was mainly for keeping your baits from sticking together (like rolling them in salt), so why not just use unscented worm oil for that? Bassinfool
The baits absorb the scent if you put it in the bag. It's just scented worm oil and the baits will absorb it well if you let them sit in it.
joelhains
I'm actually pouring some swimbaits tonight that I'm going to use tomorrow. I'm doing two different colors. With the first color I packed them in a bag and added the scented worm oil to the bag. For the second color I added scent to the plastic itself. One thing I've noticed is that the bait feel softer than the first ones.
Bassinfool
Worm oil acts as a softener in the plastic.
alsworms
Well I guess I never let the baits sit long enough to absorb the oil. LOL! Joel.....I'm interested in hearing the results of your experiment. Again.....only speaking from personal experience here........a buddy and I used to fish using different scents.......in the baits......added to the baits, etc......just to see what the results would be. . I can tell you that scents (mainly crawfish and/or anise) added to the plastic mix won every time.....hands down! Now that's where we fish and it comes back to what we talk about all the time.......confidence. I'll bet if you have a great day using your baits mixed with scent, you probably won't go back. On the other hand, I may have just shot myself in the foot! LOL
Bassinfool
I'll tell you right now that using those bagged baits with scent tomorrow it is going to wash off. Simply hasn't had enough time to absorb into the plastic.
joelhains
How long should the baits be bagged before using them to give the enough time to absorb he scent?
Bassinfool
Depends on the strength and amount of scent utilized. I make my own scents for the most part and they're very very strong. My garlic scent is by far the most potent and if I put ~10 drops into a bag with a little extra worm oil just to keep things from sticking it takes just a few days and they soak up the majority of the scent and worm oil. This is how I bag my stuff: take all the plastics I've made (same color, unless they're all non bleeding colors) and place them into a big Tupperware container. Squirt in some worm oil and whatever scent I'm using, put the lid on and shake. Let it sit for 30 minutes and the shake it all up again. Give it another 30 minutes and then throw them in a bag. MonteSS
I add 25 drops per 4 oz and cook it in
joelhains
Are there any companies that sell scented powder? I've been playing around with adding scent to the plastic and adding enough scent to the plastic to be noticeable makes the baits too soft.I also wonder if a powdered scent might be more potent. Don't quote me on this, but I believe it was Upper Hand Scents who played around with scent powders. I tried their crawfish powder once and it was really cool stuff. Mixed well with the plastic and was VERY potent! I just checked their website (briefly) and didn't notice it on there. Maybe it was just a trial run, or perhaps they might have some left over if you give them a call?

I didn't see it on they're site either but I'll try calling them again to see if they have any. I have a feeling a powdered scent could be very effective for our baits.
