MikePaintsBaits
I was able to get this lot of (50 Vintage Bagley Honey B's Wood Blanks) They do not have lips installed , There 2 1/8 in long. I've never installed crank bait lips , can you builders tell me what size lip I'll need , I'm thinking of using circuit board lips and re-painted most of these. Thanks Mike P. RayburnGuy
Hey Mike, Good to hear from you. It's been a while. It doesn't look like the lip slots are cut in those baits Mike. Your first problem is going to be how to get a slot cut in the bait that's square, true and cut to the proper angle and depth. Are you planning on buying pre-cut lips or are you going to cut them yourself? Do you have one of the original baits with the lip installed? If you do you might be able to pull the lip out and then use the body of the bait to make a mold with a guide in it to use to cut the slot. And if you can get the lip out in one piece you could use it as a template for cutting the other lips. There are a few places where you can buy pre-cut lips, but I'm not sure they will match the original Bagley lips. Seems like someone posted a link to a guy that would cut custom lips, but I can't remember where it was. Hopefully someone will be able to come up with a better answer for you. Good luck. MikePaintsBaits
Hey Ben , Thanks I was planning on buying pre-cut lips , I have some honey B's , I guess if someone can make lips for me , I'll go that route. And / Or I can find someone to just do the cuts and install the lips , Laughing Mike
Vodkaman
Good advice from Ben, but I would stop short of cutting up a Bagley original as these are obviously copies. Check out pictures of originals for the shape and angle of the lips. Make the first couple of lips too long. Trim them back gradually until the bait swims, then make a template. As Ben said, cutting the lip slot is going to be the hardest part. There have been a number of solutions posted about jigs for such operations, here is one method that I posted. The problem for you is that it is pointless searching for 'lip jig' as the search function will not operate of 3 letter words. I did a search for 'lip slot' and that helped me find relevant threads. MikePaintsBaits
Thanks Dave This should be fun , I have enough baits to make mistakes. Mike
mark poulson
Putting blue painter's tape on the lips and marking a centerline on them will help you align your lips when you install them.
