Matt Moreau
Sup Guys, Just thought I would start a fun post. Last night I was thinking about what my favorite pattern to paint is and why...Is it the challenge of the pattern or maybe because that particular pattern catches fish? Or is it some other weird reason? I dont think Pics are needed for this thread we do not want to clog the forum up. If you want to participate just let us know what you like to paint and why. You dont have to give up any secret patterns or anything like that. I am just curious what others get out of this hobby. I know some of the more challenging jobs are rewarding in the end but to be honest those dont seem to get much water time for me. I think in the back of my mind I am apprehensive to throw them. If a particular bait just comes out and smaks me in the face its soo nice it usually gets hung on the wall and i proceed to make another to fish. LOL I know i am weird! This is usually a gill or cracker pattern that has a lot of steps to paint. For me I think my favorites are crawdad patterns because they are fairly simple and they flat out catch fish. I have made all different color craws and they seem to be the first ones I pull out of the box.
mark poulson
I really like ghost patterns, lightly misted transparents over clear plastic baits so they are still see-thru. I fish clear lakes, and the clear ghost patterns get bit really well, both shad patterns and craw patterns.
Tracy G
I think that mine would have to be shad patterns (purpe in paticular) because of the simplicity and they flat out catch fish here.
flipper2
Matt, Although I'm pretty new to building and airbrushing. It really does seem like the better my bait turns out the more likely it will be hung over the work bench. I guess I'm a little like Mark I enjoy doing the lite ghostly patterns. However, at my skill level there is not a lot to choose from simple 70's patterns or I think they call it abstract?
Musky Glenn
My vote is for firetiger, works good in musky lures. Musky Glenn
Cougarftd
I love bluegill and crappie patterns. I use 12 different color changes in my gill. Just love painting them
MuskyGary
I love repainting shad raps and my favorite color is a chartruse bluegill.
CustomBaits4You
Bluegills are my favorite, usually on 1.5 and 2.5s
sonoman
Whatever pattern the guy wants, I have discovered what I like is giving them what they asked for, lately its been solid pearl white....I'm likely really?...ok, no problem, seriously though bluegill patterns that come out well look amazing! CustomBaits4You
I enjoy painting bluegills but I have yet to master it
RayburnGuy
I know this isn't the answer your looking for, but it's not the painting I enjoy since my painting skills are lacking to say the least. The thing that trips my trigger is the building of the lure. Especially when you can come up with something that is truly your own. MikePaintsBaits
First Off , If Any Of You Are Like Matt , As He Has Stated Above (challenging jobs are rewarding in the end , but to be honest those don't seem to get much water time) Please Feel Free To Get My Address , I'll Be More Than Happy To Get Your Baits Any Water Time As Needed (Laughing) Blue Gill / Craw Patterns Mike
BobP
I'm like Ben - after the satisfaction of building a batch of lures, I think "Crap, now I have to finish them". But when it goes right, I guess my favorite is silver foil with whatever colors added. I'm resigned that I'll never be better than a 'meat and potatoes' airbrusher. So in that light, my favorite pattern to actually paint is Firetiger: orange-chartreuse-green-black with the details shot through a paint template. Easy peasy. Bois d'Arc
Threadfin Shad and Redbreast or Bluegill sunfish patterns. I use the Roughfish web site for reference pictures and I'm amazed at the different looks of the same species.
Reelentless
I'm fond of the gills/sunfish and trout patterns. I think they're the perfect balance of contrast & realism. Though I must admit I fish some pretty funky patterns trolling for walleye on Erie that still amaze me today that they work
bassguy
For some reason, I've been doing a lot of bluegill patterns, they're not great but I believe if you capture the essence of the bait fish, that is all you need, because largemouth being ambush motivated, they're not going to do a double check on how the bait looks. TrinityLureCompany
Mine is definitely Firetiger. The combination of orange and yellow gets me everytime.
Matt M
I recently started doing a crawfish pattern that was challenging for me and the results are good
FrogAddict
I like gill patterns as well but I've started making them much simpler. I caught a ton of bass last year on a SK sexy dog in gill and I noticed it was pretty simple so that's the strategy. I just posted a pic to the gallery but I can't remember how to link it here Edited January 2, 2015 by FrogAddict
bassinjody
mine would be Bluegills and shad.
benton B
I suck at painting my baits. Nothing worse than building a master piece and then think crap I've got to paint it. My hats off to the guys with theairbrush skills. I'm with Bob and Ben, simple colors laid down clean is about all I can hope for when it comes to painting. My fav pattern wouldhave to be a simple shad or citrus shad. Edited January 2, 2015 by benton B

spoonpluggergino
I build musky baits, so I try to paint natural colors some of my favorites are walleye, perch and sucker color baits. I do love to paint bluegills but that takes too much of my time and my patience is kind of limited, too many details Gino
FrogAddict
This is my simplistic gill pattern based on the SK gill. I used gold, brown and indigo blue over a white base. These just have painted on eyes but since I built these, I've started making my own 3D eyes. I just hope it'll catch em. I'm with you guys, sometimes the painting is the most challenging and frustrating part of the process. http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/media/gallery/category_8/gallery_45642_8_955887.jpg Edited January 2, 2015 by FrogAddict
