robalo01
I am new to jig tying (you've probably gathered that from my recent posts) so forgive my ignorance. Is there a viable and cheaper synthetic alternative to bucktail?
Jig Man
I don't know that it is cheaper but craft hair works pretty well.
robalo01
Where do you get it? What is it usually used for?
LimpNoodle
Bucktail is pretty cheap if you shop around. There's a product called Fishair that works pretty good.

Jig Man
I got my first craft hair through a group at Dale Hollow Lake. They use it for FnF to catch winter smallies. I have also bought some at hobby stores.
smalljaw
X3 on the fish hair!!!! The only problem with fish hair is the price so I only use certain colors for accents and that way it goes pretty far. There is also a learning curve with fish hair, bucktail has a natural taper to it, fish hair doesn't and if you line the hair up at the same length you will end up with a jig that looks like a paint brush. The advantages are few but a big one is the colors, you can a lot more colors and it is easier to work with but learning to work with it and the price are the two biggest cons I can think of. EDIT: I didn't list craft fur because I don't think it is a substitute for bucktail, craft fur has a lively action and has a fluid like motion where bucktail has a more subdued action. robalo01
I get that Bucktails are cheap in the US; I can´t get them in Mexico, though. Looking for something that might not be originally purposed for jig tying but could work as a substitute. Maybe I can find something locally. goodtimesfishing
Can you not have it shipped to where you are at?? I understand you might not have them available local but you should be able to have some shipped to you??
robalo01
Of course I can have it shipped here, but then it gets expensive.
DaBehr
I get a lot of my fly tying materials from Feather-Craft. They have just about every synthetic hair on the market! https://www.feather-craft.com/wecs.php?store=feacraft&action=inventory_browse_page&page=
