The only problem with fish hair is the price so I only use certain colors for accents and that way it goes pretty far. There is also a learning curve with fish hair, bucktail has a natural taper to it, fish hair doesn't and if you line the hair up at the same length you will end up with a jig that looks like a paint brush. The advantages are few but a big one is the colors, you can a lot more colors and it is easier to work with but learning to work with it and the price are the two biggest cons I can think of. EDIT: I didn't list craft fur because I don't think it is a substitute for bucktail, craft fur has a lively action and has a fluid like motion where bucktail has a more subdued action. Looking for something that might not be originally purposed for jig tying but could work as a substitute. Maybe I can find something locally.
