jonister
So I have this wonderful idea of making a giant spinnerbait for giant fish, but im not sure if the hook should be free swiveling or in line, what do u guys think would work best? Mr_Scrogg
Only thing about that is you lose the weedless part. Spinner bait comes through brush well cause the hook is inline with everything and fixed.
Musky Glenn
Mr. Scrogg times 2, I don't believe you want a spinner bait hook rotating. Musky Glenn
21xdc
It don't have to rotate... I have built many spinnerbaits with just an eye coming out of the lead instead of the hook. Then use a split ring to attach the hook. Allows you to use and length any size hook of your choice. The hook stays upright but can swivel back and forth sideways. Videos have shown me that when a fish sucks the bait into their mouth, the swiveling hook is also pulled in. I believe the bite to hook ratio can be better, as well as the fish has far less chance to throw the hook as the weight and ridged bait cant be used as leverage.... I have made some of these with the Gami EWG Finnesse hooks in 3/0 or 4/0... I cant remember. The split ring allows for use of trebels, double hooks or none for practice days.. BuckMaxx
Id go with 21xdcs idea that sounds great but now to my real reason to responding. This tickled me a bit because I started making 1 ounce short light shaft spinnerbaits for smalleys. I wanted to fish the 15 to 20 foot area and couldn't reach there( atleast with my lack of patience ) So I built 3 of em, nice little single willowleave blades, custom shad skirts and all. I headed off too the lake. I know a tree that I caught a 5 lber off of back in the spring so I headed there. First cast I looked down about the time a 40" pike smoked it. I swung at him and he ate it off so fast it was just air on the swing. I cussed and tied on another. I chucked it back in there and had a bite.. Swing!!! He decided to go the other way and lost my second spinnerbait. Now I was really pissed. I thought alright you motha... So I tied on the last one. Same spot and this time Ill let it sink to the bottom where the bass should be. I started winding ti..nothing...nothing.. nothing... it all most all the way to the boat when there was another 40" swirl on it with 3' feet of line out and take it. I screamed and probably dribbled a little. Moral of the story... They do catch giant fish. Atleast if you can keep em on.
jonister
@21xdc I like your idea, I may have to try it instead so that the bigger fish cant get that leverage. @buckmaxx I know that bigger doesn't always mean big fish and u cant catch always catch a small fish on big lures but I plan on fishing for fish that would bend anything too small and have some plans for a quick easy adjustable skirt collar. just thinking out of the box, I mean hey isn't that how all of us got here? P.S. this is probly going to be for saltwater use. (tuna, lingcod, rockfish, halibut) Edited October 10, 2014 by jonister
