What Are The Best Split Ring Pliers?

Recommended Posts

If you don't want to pay to much, I found a blue pair at walmart for a couple bucks. they were berkleys, and have a bent tip, the bent tip helps with leverage a ton once you get used to them. they also are the best pair I have found that work on large diameter and thick splitrings.

I have had several split ring pliers, but none compares to the Leadmaster pliers, 5" model.

They come with their phone number on the pivot, but it's not valid now, so I don't even know if they're still around.  But they are/were the best.

I have a pair of Rapala split ring pliers, and I ground the tongue down to make it thinner in both directions so it works well for #2 and larger split rings.

I found that, for .092 screw eyes, I stick with the #6 and larger split rings, but made by a good manuf.

I buy Danielson rings on TW.  I'm sure there are quality bulk sources for the same thing, but I don't need that many.

I tried some cheapie bulk rings and they stayed open after I put them on the lures, so they went in the recycling.

What about for muskie sized hooks , I use the big game screw eyes and they often kink out the O rings ... Any advice

One of the things I like about the Leadmaster pliers, and which I was able to duplicate pretty closely with the Rapalas by grinding and filing, is that the 90 degree tip, which drops past the end of the other jaw when the pliers are closed, is thin, so it more easily slips between the split ring coils to open them.  They work for anything from the fine split rings on spinnerbaits to the #7 on my bigger swimbaits.

I found that, with the pliers which have a wedge/pyramid on the inside face of one jaw which squeezed the ring against the other jaw, is that, for me, it's much easier to miss the split in the rings, and harder to position the opened ring on the hook or hanger.

X4 Texas Tackle.  Geomel1518, it's not about the pliers, it's about the thickness of the eyes' wire.  The only way I know of fixing it is to use open screw eyes and crimp them closed after slipping on the split rings.  I avoid the problem by making my own screw eyes from thinner stainless wire, which are plenty strong and have more glue area for a stronger grip in the lure.  Only takes a minute to do them so why not go "100% custom"?

Texas Tackle makes 3 sizes, including a x-tra large heavy duty size. I don't have this model (I have the other two), but thought this might help ya..
