Leaders?

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I fish the Saint Croix river mostly, And had a rash of leader breakage this season.

I use 100# Power pro Braided line with 165# Joe Bucher's on my Cat and muskie rod with no breakage but they leave a little to be desired for suppleness They are stiff and hold the bends when they get into "River garbage" and need to be straightened after almost every fish or snag

On my "Mid weights" I've been using 65# Power pro and Berkley, Lindy,or Berkley 35# to 65# vinyl and straight wire

Normally when we hit Snags the joke in the boat is "What prizes are we going to pull in this time"

We pull in "Lost lures" nearly every trip

Anyway

This year I had more than one "lost Lure"  and a couple of lost fish on all 3 of the lighter weight leaders

I decided to start building my own Leaders, been doing research on Wires/cables etc...

What do you guys think of TWIST WELD? I was thinking 150# for the heavies and 50# or 80# for the mids

How supple is it?

How well does the heated joint/knot hold up after repeated abuse?

Any input will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I'm not suggesting this particular product will fail but the mutli-strand leader buddy was using to cast musky lures had 3 of the strands break over a period of 3-4 months.  It was looped with a ball bearing swivel and had a couple of sleeves holding it together.   The individual strands loosened from the initial twist probably because it was looped.

Was it the quality of the wire or the way it was assembled?  Hard to say because it didn't appear to have a weak spot.

Have you tried downrigger cable?

Hope this helps
