Tying Bucktails for musky Baits

Recommended Posts

I always tie smaller bucktails but I am sure the same rules apply to larger ones. First put the hook in a vice, next tie the string aroung the hook a few times amd make sure it is secure before adding any hair. Now start adding hair when you put the hair on make sure you dont try and do to much at a time or else it will fall out. When you put on the hair adding a small amount at a time ensures that it will not pull out like some of the cheap bucktails from the store. Then once you have the desired amount of hair on tie a loop and put it around the head of the jig then seal the string with nail polish or head cement.

Hope this helps, if you need any further instructions feel free to ask I can probably help you out.

HOLD THE PRESSES!! I was going to go to bed but had to come back to reply to this one. If you had a muskie swallow your bucktail and had to cut the hook to release the fish quickly, you would have a treble that is unusable for most. There is a way around this. Joe Bucher sells his bucktails tied like this as does alot of mfgr's I assume. Moore Lures sells a 'collar' that rides on the shaft above the treble. The bucktail is tied to this collar. The treble is below and if put on the wire with a split ring, replaceable. These collars are similar to a throttle housing on a lawn mower. Page 11 of the Moore catalog ( though it is a 2003 one) has these collars. Even weighted ones. Enjoy :D .
