BobP Posted December 5, 2014 Report Share Posted December 5, 2014 I use soft temper 302/304 ss wire for line ties and hook hangers because it's easy to shape and plenty strong enough for bass baits. The hard temper version of 302/304 ss wire has more than twice the tensile strength and I think it would be about as tough as you could get in stainless wire, though it would be much harder to shape. I recommend you look at the web pages for ss wire at mcmaster.com which lists various wire types and their physical properties. It's also a great place to order wire. I use .059 304 hard temper on my line ties and troll 7+ mph and never had a failure. There's more stress at the line tie than there is at the joint sections. mark poulson Posted December 5, 2014 Report Share Posted December 5, 2014 Hinge joints wear differently and have different stresses than line ties and hook hangers. You should use a thicker sst wire, or sst screw eyes, minimum .072 gauge, for your hinges. I use the .072 eyes, and sst bicycle spokes as hinge pins, and have never had a hinge failure in 10 years+-. I've use twist wire, but it was tempered spinnerbait wire and really hard to bend. I switched to screw eyes because the sst wire that was tough enough for hinges was too hard to bend.
