Thanks , I was pleasantly surprised that getting something useful was not too hard, a couple of my teenagers gave it a try after a few minutes doodling on cardboard and it was off to the races for them.  YouTube is officially a bad place for me to dig around on lots of junk but then you run into folks who get it (Paul Adams to name a highlight) and it like yea I can do that and away you go.

When you are  working for yourself vs making 100 #3 Perch that look the same, it’s only a mistake if you can’t make it work into something. Like that old saying “it’s not that a good carpenters don’t make  mistakes it that they are better at hiding them”

Getting actually good will take time but that is the other draw even though it was easy to start there is lots of room to grow.  I was worried about not having enough bodies but then just today I saw a post on practicing on PVC pipe so there goes that problem.

Color mixing

Reducing

Shading

Pattern refinement

Lots on the todo list

Nice job!

Try the AC1315 as a topcoat.  It plays nice with air brush paints, is quick and easy, dip and hang, and it's durable.  If you can, do your dipping outside, and then bring it back inside to dry and cure, but with ventilation.

I do one dip for my bass lures.

I let it drip back into my dipping jar, wipe off the last drips with my finger and scrape that back into the jar, and the let it hang.  After 15 minutes or so I hit it lightly with my hair dryer, and again after another 15 minutes.  It's dry enough to handle in an hour, and you can fish it the next day.

I've tried spray clears, epoxies, dip urethanes, and Solarez, and this stuff is the best.  I still use the Solarez for same day top coating, or for adding a little more weight a lure, but otherwise I only use the AC1315 now.

-25c last night so I had two heaters going in the garage so high fume stuff is not really practical most of the time, but really unless the bait is for ice fishing I could continue to paint, roll in plastic wrap to keep them clean and safe, then bulk seal come spring time. When I was at my plastics supplier I asked about sealers and they have something that sound similar, from west systems so it’s something to consider. I am a pike walleye fisherman primarily so the durability is a primary concern, but there will be some trout sized lures so I was thinking of a layer or 3 of spray lacquer for those, would that be OK.

If you have any ventilation it'll be fine, but not in a closed space.

If durability is a real issue, try Solarez.  It is a surfboard repair resin, so it is very strong.  It is also very low/no fumes, and it is UV light cured, so it will cure even in the cold.  I dip my baits in it, and let them drip back into the bottle.   Then I hang them a a 36 watt UV fingernail light box for three minutes, and they are ready to fish.

If I lived where it was cold, and I had to work indoors, it would me top coat of choice.

This is where I got mine:

I have been thinking about the UV cures, the dip concept seems like a win especially when I do bigger baits, but now that Alumilite has entered that space I’ll probably go that way,  a local hobby shop is a dealer and will tag on special orders to their periodic store orders, I just can’t be in a rush, but no shipping, and no stupid mark-up is a decent trade off for needing to be patient. The devcon was an easy first try and a multi tasker  in this game.

I need a couple of gallons of soft plastic anyways J.

We love seeing your creations but the photo's should be put in the gallery...Nathan

With all due respect, not being able to post a picture to a matching post is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. These forums are loaded with information and it's really a hassle to have someone talk about something in a post, and then have them post their pictures in the "gallery" for the person reading it to go and find. Especially an older post when your searching for something instead of asking up front and have the people who have been on here for awhile telling you "it's already been discussed, just do a search for it."   This is a lure building forum where people share their tips and tricks and show off their achievements. People should be able to add pictures to their posts and then decide if they want to have it is some bogus art exhibit. well over half of the stuff in the gallery has no description or information on why it's posted anyway. And if people were to add pictures to their post and to the art museum, I believe it would make this website a lot easier to navigate. Dumbest rule I've come across in any forum I've ever been a part of, fishing related or not. If you could shed some light on why this is even a rule to begin with it  would be greatly appreciated because I'm sure i'm not the only person who feels this way.

Well moon your off to a good start for your first post.

If we allowed everybody to post their " look what I made" pictures here there wouldn't be much room left for discussing how to make lures... That's what the Gallery was made for.Like it says in the rules, if your picture lends something to the discussion by all means post it...but the simple " See what I made" isn't allowed here.It has been that way since 2003 when this forum started...Nathan

Nathan hit the nail on the head with his response.

If a photo adds to the topic in a meaningful way, such as in showing various steps taken to accomplish a specific method of a lure making process, then by all means add it.

But if it's only a picture of a finished lure that someone has made, it needs to be in the gallery.

We're not against having pics posted in the forums, but we are against having the forums get overrun with photos being posted just for the sake of showing people what you've made.

Hope this clears things up for you.

Well i guess i signed up for the wrong forum then. Seems like there is an over abundance of people on here that have been members of this forum for awhile that brought them to some veteran status that are riding on a high horse with ignorance for the new basic homemade lure builders that are in it for the fun of catching fish off something they created themselves, and not out to create a customer base or a fancy sign at the end of their driveway and putting outrageous prices on they're lures to make a living off a simple hobby. Whatever happened to the basic fun of fishing. This site seems like it's for people out to create lures that attract fisherman more than fish, and put some money in they're pocket while they are at it. Money doesn't buy happiness, getting on the water and catching fish sure does though. So if you have any leads on a forum with down to earth creative backwoods kind of people it would be greatly appreciated.  Sincerely, rnoon0301, as in Roger Noon, not moon.
