SLT785
What's everyone's favorite metal and size for making through wire crankbaits, bass>musky. I've read that some use SS, brass and some kind of welding wire?
BobP
Can't speak about musky baits but my favorite wire for bass baits is .041" diameter soft temper stainless steel. It forms very easily by hand and is strong enough when bent into a small diameter hook hanger or line tie that it will bend only when you want it to - such as when you want to tune your crankbait without breaking the finish on the nose of a bait. McMaster-Carr sells it online in 1/4lb spools for around $7. Soft temper brass is softer than stainless, copper is even softer. Both of them corrode. mark poulson
From the videos I've seen of musky fishing, I'd use some really heavy wire. Those things look like monsters!
Anglinarcher
Brass, best way to go. It is soft enough to tune later. I size it according to the lure I am making, but you would be surprised how little it can be and still take on Musky.
