OsageJoe
Is there a good way/product to do this?
Big Ray
Wow that is a good idea I never thought of that. I never melted store bought lures to use with my molds so I am not sure. If I was you I would get a used microwave off of craigslist. Then get some Pyrex cups to melt your lures. Then you can order some flake from lurecraft, baitjunkys or do it molds. Melt your lures in the Pyrex cup. Then add whatever flake you like. Shoot or pour your bait and that is about it.
OsageJoe
I basically just want to take a flat brown paca chunk and add blue flake to it.
ipt
you are asking if you can add flake to a pre-made bait without remolding it? there would be a couple ways but none worth the time or effort. (in my opinion)
alsworms
You could remelt the baits and add your blue flake, but you have to be VERY careful about what you're remelting. Lots of mass produced baits have heavy salt and/or moisture in them.......and can explode! I'm not too familiar with the paca chunk, but bottom line is if you don't know what they're made of, don't risk it.
Big Ray
Wow Alsworms I didn't know that if you melt some plastic baits they can explode. But if he does want to make that bait he defiantly needs to either make a mold of it with plaster of paris or buy a mold that is similar. Then he might as well just buy some plastisol and colorant and do it the right way. The only thing that I am not sure of is how the heck do you get pork fat in your plastic? alsworms
Yup......that would be the safest bet, Big Ray. One of the MANY lessons I learned while pouring is if I didn't make it, I'm not remelting it. LOL
Bassinfool
Big one is anything from Berkley. That stuff becomes a violent, boiling hellbroth that you just don't need to be dealing with.
w2outdoors
I just recently got an injector and mold and I've been melting down whatever soft plastics I currently have from last year. I've melted down paca craws, berkley, zoom, yum... Practically whatever is availble. I will say this - Whenever I melted down berkley, *make sure you are in a WELL vented room or garage. That stuff sure can leave a smell for the ages. Yum brand products are packed with salt. This makes the baits less soft. What I have done is melted down yum products, and let them cool in a coffee mug. Once the soft plastic has cooled, majority of the salt rest on the bottom and I just take a pair of scissors and trim it off. Zoom baits are probably one of the softest and easiest I have found to work with. Some baits do have moisture. I usually place something over the top of my pyrex to keep keep it from potentially leaving a smell behind while I'm melting it down inside the house before I transfer it to the garage. Don't put anything over the glass like a lid because that will cause the top to blow off. FUN HOBBY that's for sure!
Yo Al
W2- you should probably look into safety for melting soft plastic. Fumes, ventilation, respirator etc so you can enjoy this hobby for a long time. Melting in the house doesn't just stink it up. This stuff can cause serious health problems.
