TroyD
I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried to make a mold from wood by carving it out with a dremel.or something like that.
curt k
A number of years back I cut an mdf open pour frog mold with a cnc router , worked great and I only sealed it with varnish . That was the first bait mold that I ever made . Router quickly got replaced with a few mills Edited January 22, 2015 by curt k
SlowFISH
You can pretty much use anything that will take the heat for a mold. Wood, plaster, clay, resins/plastics, etc, etc.... it will all come down to your surface finish and life expectancy of the mold. I make all my molds from a material called REN shape - its' not rated to take heat over mid-200's.... but it works perfectly fine with exception of a little distortion after alot of pours - but once clamped shut it's no big deal or I let it cool off a bit and continue. You can really use almost anything to be honest.... but please use common sense!!! LOL!! Even though we pour anywhere from 280-350 - the plastic is only that temp for a short time as it's quickly transfering heat to the mold... that's probably why my REN works even though it's not rated for the temps I'm using.... I've also used Dick Nite's lurecoat (original formula) on the inside of molds and it works well giving a glossy bait.... may be something to consider for sealing up wood if you go that route.... reduce it a bit with acetone and it should soak right in.... I'd research what guys are using to seal balsa baits... J. Edited January 22, 2015 by SlowFISH
alsworms
Years ago, I bought a bunch of stuff from a guy who poured in the 70's. Many of the molds were made of wood, and they all made great lookin' baits!
Chuy77
I made a 2 piece mold on what I called a fluke worm out of wood. The one thing I can say is that you have to really clean up the mold and add any type of coating. I believe I used 5 minute epoxy for mine. I never abused it per say, so I know I have it some where. I will get it out and pour some later on when it gets warmer so you can all see. They were very popular for a while but I got away from it when someone copied it and claimed it as there own. It takes the magic away from it all, some of you might know what im talking about.
