spoonpluggergino
I am thinking on doing some baits and apply ultra fine glitter. I have done a search and found that some painters mix the glitter in to the clear coat and brush it on. I was wondering in order to have better control is it possible to spray it through a airbrush this way I will have better control where to apply the glitter, and not messing around with epoxy clear. I am thinking on buying a Paasche MIL brush .73 MM tip and use Createx 5604 top gloss, mix glitter in the top gloss and spray it on the bait. Before I spend some green stuff I would like to see if any one has done this. I could use the .73MM brush to shoot some of the heavier peralized paint that cannot be done through a smaller tip Thanks Gino Edited January 26, 2015 by spoonpluggergino
Cougarftd
I have in the past mixed some micro glitter with createx clear (thinned a bit) you get to apply it where you want. When finished with the glitter I rinse the gun and shoot a couple of quick coats of createx clear before applying a more durable clear coat. Matt Moreau
I do exactly what you are thinking and it works to some degree. It depends on the particle size of the material you plan on buying and how you apply it. Now in the automotive industry they don't use the term glitter so we need to define that. For our intents and purposes I would say Flake is bigger than .004, glitter is .004 and pearl is .008 and smaller. Anything .004 or larger will give you fits in an AB. I have a Paasche talon I use for pearls and glitter. It has a .66 needle and will still clog on the .004 if its too thick or u have an air leak. Its hard to get just right but maybe your .73 will do fine. I would just suggest a tiny bit of material mixed with a lot of Gloss and many light coats. I usually mix like a 1/32 teaspoon in a 2oz create bottle. then fill half way and see if it sprays. If not more gloss...if it does see if you get the coverage you want and if not add a tiny bit of glitter. Just remember a little goes a long way. Also the Gloss Clear isn't thick like true urethane enamel so with flakes they do not lay perfect and coverage is tuff. If you were thinking about laying heavy glitter or like pure flake I wouldn't advise it. If you just are looking to get that glitter look like on commercial baits when it hits the sun right then yes it works ok with .004 and better smaller like .008(this is more of a sheen than glitter). If you want to spray true flake like on an automobile then I would suggest you move to a true HVLP gun with a 1.0 needle. This works for the smaller flakes but you cannot be precise or anything with it.
spoonpluggergino
I purchased while back ultra fine glitter from Hobby Lobby, basically I just want some sparkling on sunny days to get some attraction. I am going to purchase a needle, cap and nozzle for 1MM conversion for AB just to be on the safe side. I need something to air brush heavier pearl paints any way, so it will not be a waste. Even dough I have been doing this for three years I am still a green horn, I do take my time to try new things' I really appreciate your professional help Thank You Gino
RayburnGuy
I've tried several different ways of applying glitter and for a truly random distribution I've started spraying it through a mini blaster. I think it's a Master mini blaster. I got it at TCP global if you want to take a look at it Gino. Spraying the glitter doesn't leave voids in one area and thick patches in others. The way I do it is to spray the bait with Createx clear where I want the glitter to be and then spray it with the mini blaster. This way the glitter only sticks to the area you sprayed the Createx clear and can be brushed off of where there is no clear. Just be sure the paint is completely dry because if the paint is still tacky the glitter will stick to it. There is quite a bit of overspray of the glitter, but you can spray into a box, or anything that will catch the excess glitter, and you can save it this way. Matt Moreau
Gino are you trying to have a full flake body or just some sparkle in the sunlight? If just sparkle there is no need to buy the 1.0 conversion. Just make sure the glitter u get is 0.004 or less.
spoonpluggergino
I build Muskie baits anywhere from 5 inches to 10 inches, I woul like to put glitter on the sides of the baits, especially the flat sided baits Thanks Matt
Matt Moreau
Then yes u want flake and a larger needle. I never had good success with the createx gloss doing this though. I use auto clear and I bought the harbor freight mini gun to spray my swimbaits. It was like $20 and has lasted years no issues! Other solution is mix into epoxy or get a spray can of clear spray the bait and then sprinkle the flake on...its not nearly as nice but gets the job done. mark poulson
Have you tried adding it to a dipping top coat?
spoonpluggergino
Matt I may be lucky, I have a Harbor Freight air brush, I do not know if is the same as the mini gun you mention. I also have Finish 1 auto clear. I checked Harbor Freight but I could not find anything under mini gun Mark I do not do dipping I only use E-tex, Devcon-2ton and sometime Flex Coat Gino
spoonpluggergino
OK I found the paint mini gun at Harborfreight, another question, can I use the same air hose and compressor that I use for my AB. The compressor is tankless from Iawata Gino
Matt Moreau
Actually they call it a touch up gun now and charge double what I paid...Its not really 40 oz they messed up its more like 4 oz http://www.harborfreight.com/40-oz-hvlp-touch-up-air-spray-gun-61473.html Used to be called the Mini after the Sata Mini Jet. No if you have a compressor from Iwata meant for an AB it will not work with HVLP systems and the hose will not fit. You would need a real compressor with at least a 20 gal tank to be decent. Pickadoll
You can always try Fasglitter mixed with fascoat. Don't know how covering that glitter is but it could work. RC painters is often using fasglitter.
