New Guy Hook Questions Need Bigger Hook.

Recommended Posts

I have been snooping around this forum for quite some time and have never needed to post anything. let me start by saying that you guys are a huge asset and a plethora of knowledge. I am relatively new to jig making but My old man and I love it and its something we can do together. I have searched this forum to the best of my ability and tirelessly searched the web.  We have several molds and for the most part I am having good luck with most of them. The problem is that the main mold we use is the flat eye arkie number 3387. I am a huge jig fisherman and go through a ton of them in a season. This is my go to jig. before making my own I fished almost exclusively dirty jigs. one of the things I love about the dirties is the huge hook, probably the largest hook I have ever seen in a jig. the gauge, length and gap on the dirty jig hook is huge. So without further ado, Im looking for a larger hook to fit the 3387 flat eye jig mold. What is the largest hook I can use in this mold. I usually only fish the 1/4-3/8 size and would like to know the largest hook possible. any help will be greatly appreciated.

I use a 4/0 in mine but in my limited experience most of the molds will take a hook one size bigger than the recommendations call for. If you wanted to go even bigger you would need to do some work with a dremel and carefully remove a little bit at a time to be able to incorporate an even larger hook.

Unfortunately you aren't going to find any hooks bigger than a Trokar 805 so if you modified your mold to take those then you already have the largest hook made in a flat eye. I have the Trokar Arky mold and I got it because I can use the Owner 5304 and 5317 in it with no modification, for my own use, flat eye arky and round head are rock dragging and light brush hopping but that is just me. The only thing I can tell you is to use the 5/0 TK-805 and see if that is as large as you want as I believe that is the biggest flat eye when it comes to diameter and shank length.

If you are looking for larger as in wire diameter then you should try the Gamakatsu 5941 for the 4/0 and 5/0's.

This hook is slightly shorter in length but not much.

I measured  the  TK805  4/0  at .059  and  the 5/0 at .060.

I measured the Gama 5941 4/0 at .061 and the 5/0 at .065.
The TK 805 3/0 is a larger diameter than the Gama 5941.

any clue if the 5941 5/0 will fit the 3/8 oz slot in the mold or is the 4/0 the largest I can get in there? also do any of you guys have any experience with the trokar 825? It looks like a longer version of the 805?

The 5941 - 5/0 will not fit into the 3/8oz.

The eye is too large.

You will have to do some modification.

The difference between the Trokar 825 and the 805 is the wire diameter.

Thanks. I am pretty sure I can make it work because I have already modified my molds for a larger eye. Please Correct me if I am wrong but if I am wanting a better assortment of available hooks I should probably buy one of the molds with a vertical eye like the brush jig or the vertical arkie?

You will definitely get a better selection of hooks with the eye turned the other way.
