Fast Moving Surface / Rear Surface Lure

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a lure type that will stay surface or a foot down that can be moved fast for saltwater. Ideally should be around 5/8 to 1 oz and as small as possible. I saw guys talking about adding shot to a Zara Spook. What about the OSP KOs or the MegaBass Mega Pop KOs? Since this will be for light surf I need a good casting lure also.

Dieter's pipe lures work too but I'm looking for another idea also.

thanks in advance.

Hi Bill ,

I've been fishing Spook type surface lures for many years and they surely do have an appeal to our local pike .

I have a few Heddons , but also homemade versions .

Quite a few years ago I came across a version made by Berkley , other than the genuine Heddon Spooks it had it's line tie right at the very nose tip(the Heddons do have it slighly behind or below) , ....and I was quite dissapointed , that the Berkley lure did not walk the dog right on the surface , but 2-3 inches below , ......this is just due to the different tow eye location , I'm very sure !

...and how about plugs like the "Lucky13" or "Bass Oreno" , .....these do float and dig down to 1 to 1 1/2 foot on retrieve , .......also downscaled typical striper bass plugs might be an option for you ?

Won't cast as far as metal lures , though , ...but for wooden lures the casting perfomance of such plugs ususally is quite well .

Hey Dieter started fishing this year yet?

I've seen references to guys in Florida using weighted Spooks for what I want to do. Loses most of the walk the dog action but more splashing. Lucky 13's and Bass Orenos might work too. Bass Oreno always was one of my favorites.

The Roberts Peppy and Surface Tension lures might work. Both come in a down sized 3/4 oz version as do a couple of striper poppers. In fact the Peppy and ST might make nice pike lures. I'm going to get a couple and try them on Muskie this summer.

If spinners cast better they'd probably work too.

No fishing yet , ...but maybe coming Thursday for the first time , ....presently we've got nice springtime weather !

No lurefishing until May 1st , anyway , possibly  we're going to try for perch using earthworms and nightcrawlers as bait , ....I shall see .

I would have to google these lures , ....never came across .

Regarding spinners , ...yes , most of them do not cast very well , but I'm just thinking of spinners equipped with a so-called inline blade , ......a famous model is the "Panther Martin Spinner" :

https://www.panthermartin.com/Default.aspx

I have made such spinners before with shop-bought inline blades from "Moore's Lures" , ...and they cast pretty well , as the blades are of thicker sheet metal compared to other blade styles , ...also they do not swing about as much on a cast , since they are not rigged onto a clevis , but straight onto the spinner shaft .

Another option would be weight-forward spinners , .....in Europe there is a famous one around named the "Mörrum Spinner" :

http://www.abugarcia-fishing.de/catalogue/koeder,885/spinner-morrum,5432.html

Due to their heavy leadheads these cast extremely well .

But you've stated , that you want your lure to swim rather shallow , so these spinners designed for fast current and/or deeper water would not be suitable for you , ...........BUT , ......I've once made 2 spinners sporting such "Mörrum" style leadheads of 15 or even 18 grams , ...to be used in the shallow Hamburg city "Alster" lake I've designed them to cast as far as possible , but yet to run fairly shallow .

To achieve the shallow retrieve , I've simply mounted Colorado blades , as of all spinnerblade styles these do generate the most lift , .......and my design really did work , as I had planned .

So maybe you could just take a bullet weight of approbiate size and make yourself a weight-forward spinner , ...make sure to create a joint between the two shafts just  like the "Mörrum" has , this design works much better interms of casting compared to the American walleye spinners sporting a weight cast onto just one shaft ahead of the blade assembly .

The rear cupping of the bullet weight would accommodate the two joining eyes and thus prevent the rear shaft assembly to swing forward to an extend to foul the hook to the attached line .

You might even rig two Colorado blades to make up for a spinner "Bulger" style , ......this way you'd even get more lift to you lure , ...even with a heavy weight in front :

Just an idea on a short term , Bill .

Good ideas Dieter and I can test on Muskie first. :-)

Here's the two lures I was talking about:

PS: wish those Abu travel rods were sold here in the US

These lures you've linked do surely look like well suited lures for the surf , .....not so sure about muskie , though .

Such travel rods are widely available around here , .....every tackle company issues their own models .

But in the times of the internet it should not be a problem to buy your stuff overseas , ....just for example  ...here is an offering from the UK :

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/abu-garcia-diplomat-spinning-rod-10ft-p295453

......and various travel rods on multiple pages from one of Germany's biggest mailorder shops :

http://www.gerlinger.de/angelruten/steckruten/reiseruten?p=2

One interesting thing about that ABU site is , that if you'd select different country's versions top right corner of page and check the offerings thoroughly , you'd find , that they have different offerings for different countries , ...meaning that the complete line of their tackle is not distributed on every national market .
