Swimbait Headmold

Recommended Posts

It depends on what you're looking for in a head and what kind of swim baits you are using. I've been using the Shad Head rig jig, it uses a stout hook and has no collar but a wire keeper. It also uses 3D eyes and it has been really good on soft plastic swim baits like the little dipper or the Gene Larew sweet swimmer. The Snootie and Poison tail will work as well as will with the regular swim jigs but as purely a swim bait head the shad head rig jig is what you want.

I like the Bullet Nose Jig Mold (Doit  BDB-5-A) for my swimbaits.  It pours 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4.  I use the Mustad 32724 hook in 1/8 or 1/4 oz for my swimbaits that I use on my umbrella rigs because it has a lighter wire hook and I can straighten the hook if I get hung up rather than losing my entire rig.  For my single swimbaits, I use the Mustad 32886 hook because I like a heavier hook on single swimbaits.........Just a little trick that I've learned, I cut just a tad of the nose off of my swimbait before I glue them on the head.  It makes the nose straight across instead of rounded and they fit flush against the head.

The 32886 is a 30 degree bend and that mold was made for a 60 degree bend hook.  Does it work ok or did you have to mod the mold for the hook?
