Ichthus
So, I've been tinkering with wake baits lately. Have gotten a lot of them to get tight wiggles. Which is alright. However, I can't seem to get that nice head bashing action from my lips. Any tips would be appreciated. I've been experimenting with sizes shapes angles ect. But can't seem to find my problem. Thanks.
Vodkaman
We need some pics of what you are shooting with. It is OK to post lure pics if it is with a subject in mind and this qualifies. Dave
Ichthus
finally got around to posting the pictures. The action is a tight wiggle. but I realized after painting (of course) that i would've rather done it in a wide wiggling version. how do I achieve this? bass100
You need a wider lip.
Ichthus
Thanks. I made it a little wider than the bait but that isn't enough? Is there a general ratio you guys use?
mark poulson
I generally make it 1/2" wider than the lure body, so it is 1/4" past on each side. It is a lot easier to narrow a too-wide lip than to widen it after it's installed.
benton B
You may want to try a round body design to get the wide wobble. You can also try moving the line tie under the nose, right on top of the lip. That position gives my baits a strong wobble.
Seeking 56
This one has a pretty wicked wake.
Ichthus
I really like that bait. I'm taking notes as always lol. I guess I'm still pretty green at actually making crankbaits.

Seeking 56
I bought it for muskie a few years back, it's a 6'' Bagley with an aluminium lip. Edited April 1, 2015 by Seeking
Ichthus
It's possible for me to just cut out the old lip and put a wider one in right?
Ichthus
I don't think it'll harm the lure. It may not be as pretty but I'm goin for action over looks. Correct me if I'm wrong im just kinda thinking out loud.
Seeking 56
Yes, you should be able to cut it out and put a new one in. I would tack it in though, less of a pain to remove should you not like the action.
FrogAddict
Dieter has a really cool video on how to make a wake bait on a lathe. It's old school and fun to fish. Here's a pic of one I made.
