Lip/ Bill Replacement

Recommended Posts

Well you did get back the important part.   :D

Fairly easy fix, especially if you have another to trace the general lip shape from.  Give the lip slot a good cleaning and look for any cracks, chips, etc.. in the mouth and repair.  Some Devcon 5 minute and slide the lip in and good to go.

I'd sand the lip slot to remove any loose glue or wood and then pack it with a paste epoxy like Rod Bond, which is a waterproof 4000 psi epoxy.  Push in the new lip, wipe off the sqeeze-out, and hang the bait by its belly hanger overnight.  The nice thing about Rod Bond is it gives you time to adjust the lip before it begins to set.  I mount lips in batches of 5-6 baits at a time and the Rod Bond lets me tweak the lip positions for more than an hour, so it's not a panic operation.

5 minute epoxy works OK but it is a liquid so can leak out - plus, it turns an ugly brown after exposure to UV light for awhile.

Just finished a batch of baits that look very similar to your wounded war hero -  flat sided shallow runners based on the "little Petey", "Little PT Shad", "Dinky-Donker" pattern baits.

When fitting a lip in a lip slot I intentionally cut mine just a tad tight and then open the slot up as necessary with a metal fingernail file since I don't want a lot of slop in the fit. When doing this I only file on the bottom of the slot. This is done so that if the spot I'm filing gets a little out of square the top part of the lip is still square with the bait and all I have to do is make sure the lip fits tight to the top of the slot so it will be square with the bait.

there is a wire from the line tie thru the body.....about 1/8"  back from the lower part of the mouth and about 1/4" from the top (roof of the mouth) lip.......

That's an easy fix. All you have to do is cut a slot in the back of your lip that will allow clearance for the wire.

Any of the typical places will carry them but often to get exactly what you need best bet is to buy some lexan and/or micarta and trace a the bill or find a template online.  McMaster Carr where I usually order stuff.  Now if only going to repair the bait and not make many best bet may be to hit a member up here to send you a lip in the mail.

I might have a lip very close to that on hand.  If you want the bait to preform the same as it did before your bridge accident your replacement lip will need to be very close to the broken original.

If someone has not fixed your problem, get back with me with the information below and I'm sure we can get you back to fishing with your old friend.  If I have one I'll send it to you free-bee, you can cover shipping.

Click on this link to see a lure that is close to the one you want to fix.

You will need to know:

  • width at the top
  • width at the widest part at the bottom
  • overall length
  • thickness
  • material, in this case lexan

Good luck, we all hate to loose a bait with years of history like that.
