How To Make A Box For Baits.

For those that have swimbaits or big baits in general this is a cheap and easy way to make a box for your baits so you don't have to buy a specialty tackle box or carrier.  These boxes work well for any bait but they shine for swimbaits with soft fins.

 

1) I use insulation board from Lowes.  It costs $18 for a 4 x 8 sheet.  Get whatever thickness works for your baits, I use 1".  Be mindful if you use a different type of foam board as some I have tried scratched my finish.  This stuff is perfect.

 

2)  Cut out a piece of the insulation board.  Utility knife works fine.  Then trace your bait on to the boards.  The square I drew underneath the bait is for the hooks.  You will be making two boards because the bait will be sandwiched inbetween, so make sure you reverse the image on one side.

 

3)  I then use a deburring drill bit on my drill press to router out the shape of the bait.  You can use a hand drill if you don't have a drill press.  Deburring drill bits can get expensive but you only need a cheap one because it cuts the foam board like butter.  I takes longer to draw out your shape then it does to cut it out. This is what I use.

4) Once you have sandwiched your bait inbetween the 2 boards then simply use rubber bands or velcro to keep it all together.

 

This box is really tuff.  I can throw the bait out of the window in a moving car and the bait would be ok.  No need to buy expensive tackle boxes or carriers, you can stick these in boxes, bags, bins, etc.  You will also not get hook rash when they are being transported. Last but not least, the box will float even the heaviest of baits.

But it would take a really big fish to fit the box in it's mouth, and you'd need an old 3 man tuna pole to get the hooks through that insulation and into it's jaw.  Hahaha
