Clifford Taft
New to lead jigging spoon building but learning. One problem I am having I need help with please. I powder coat my slabs and then, after curing and cooling apply holographic vinyl tape to the jig. I then apply a coat of Devcon II. In some of the edges of the tape it starts to come away slightly from the slab. What might I be doing wrong? Appreciate your help, C. Richoc
If I get this right, the tape is coming off the powerpaint. There is the problem, adhesive is coming off the smooth hardend power paint. Some things come to mind. Try sanding the power to get the bite the adhesive needs to stay on. Or a better adhesive in needed here. Is the devcon reacting with the adhesive, making it peel back some? How long are the tape attached before coating. Maybe a longer set time or a way to set the tape in place is needed. If this is a curved surface burnish the tape down or cutting small bend releases in the tape might beneeded. No real cle as to which will solve this for you, but throwing these fixes at you any way.
cavu
Clifford I had a similar problem and found that the tape I was using was too thick. I aquired a thinner holo tape and it stays stuck. It also forms to the curves of a spoon better. Where do you get your tape from? What I use is 3/4 wide, but I plan to order wider. Send me your address and I'll be glad to send you a sample of what I use. Richoc could be on to something here with the smooth surface of the powder paint. I can never get the large flat stick-on eyes to stay stuck to a jig with a lot of curve on it. No problem with a jig like a "butter bean", but on the rounder jigs, they eyes peel up before I can get the epoxy on them. Think I will try roughing up the powder coat surface on a jig or two and see if the eyes will stay stuck.
Mr B
Try spraying a layer of clear Krylon over the sticker after it has been applied. make sure you coat the edges of the sticker. This will seal the sticker and keep it in place while the devcon is drying. Make sure the Krylon is dry before applying the epoxy Mr B
Clifford Taft
I appreciate the suggestions. I guess after enough trials and errors some success do occur. Will give all the suggestions a try. thanks, Cliff T
