WidowMaker
I own three new Shimano Cardiffs. Two are the 100 Models and one is the 200 Model. I have noticed with the 200 Model i am experiencing a "sifting" noise with each rotation of the handle as i reel it in. I am not experiencing this with either of the two 100 Models. I also noticed is when i hold the 200 Model reel in a horizontal position i can work the handle and drag back in and out of the side plate in a horizontal direction. I can also do this with the 100 Model but it is a bit more noticeable with the 200 Model. Maybe a very small amount of light weight grease on the spool races will reduce this? Skeeter
Don't grease the spool races!! This will kill your casting distance. The Cardiff is a nice reel. I have played with one in the store but have never really used one. I do have some Shimano Scorpion 1000s. They have that slight noise too when they are new. Once I threw them a couple of trips and then relubed them, the noise lessened quite a bit. I don't know where it comes from. It sounds like the spool, but nowhere on the reel does the spool touch the frame. The handle moving in and out is normal. Just about all reels do this. There is usually a C clip at the top of the shaft that the main gear and the handle sit on to keep that shaft from moving back and forth even more. This keeps the gears in line. Don't worry about it unless it is severe. Take the 200 out and throw it for an eight hour day or two. This should start the break in of the reel pretty good. Then grease the reel gears and use only a drop of oil on the bearings. The sound should either be gone or less noisey. Skeeter
WidowMaker
Im not generally one to make super long casts while im fishing. I put a very light coating of grease on the edges of the spool and one drop of oil on each bearing. The noise decreased a bit. The grease slowed it down a bit on the free spool but that is good considering it is spooled with 17 pound test and i am using it for heavier stuff like jigs. I wouldnt dare do that to the smaller 100's because spooled with 14 pound mono i can cast 3/16 ounce baits perfectly fine with them.
