fish pirate
Just checking in to see if there are any updates on solar ez or any other uv cured coatings. I am installing a uv curing system this Wednesday. I'm going to start with Alumi-UV. I hope to put enough trials together to assist others in this endeavor. I currently build with Amazing Clear Cast with great results. I just want to stay on the cutting edge with my crankbaits.
Nathan
That Alumi-UV is some pricey stuff..where are you located in Mo.?..Nathan
Jaw
Gave up on the alumi uv result to inconsistent curing was much more temperamental than solarez. The alumi uv would cure sometimes then it wouldn't no matter what I did and the finish is really not that much more glossy than solarez. Solarez wins hands down in my book
fish pirate
Whitewater, Mo I agree but sometimes you have to get out of the box to improve. It is costly to set up for UV curing but there are so many options out there that I believe it will pay off. I build about 1,000 baits per year and custom paint a lot so this will speed up things if it all pans out. I'm working with 2 light companies and 4 uv resin companies at the present time. Let me know where you are from too!
fish pirate
Great to here about your results Jaw. I'll be testing with both of those products. What kind of light set up are you using? How big are the bulbs, how many nanometers wave length, and are you turning the lures as they are curing
Nathan
Fish, http://www.ecoadvanceproducts.com/products/uv-instant-cure/ultra-v-coating.html This company sent me a sample to try...Unfortunately I've been busy with orders and haven't been able to mess with it yet...I told the guy he will need to make it avaible in smaller quantities though ..As for my Location..I'm in Clinton Mo. Which sets between KC & Springfield on Truman Resivoir..Nathan

JRammit
Great to here about your results Jaw. I'll be testing with both of those products. What kind of light set up are you using? How big are the bulbs, how many nanometers wave length, and are you turning the lures as they are curing What kinda lights does this require?... The same kinda lights folks use to grow......... Plants....?.... Just curious, i hear those cause a notible difference in the electric bill... What advantages does UV resin have over epoxy to justify this cost??
Nathan
You can actually use sun light to cure the top coat. The benefit is you can top coat and fish the bait in about 10 minutes ..Nathan
mark poulson
I got my Solarez here: http://solarez.com/products/low-voc-dual-cure-polyester-resin/
jonister
I use solarez and i love it! i have the stuff Mark recomended. it has a waxy blush after curing and is really hard to polish off. i would recomend the gloss or something else besides the original. especially if your going to sell your baits. I have not tried the gloss yet but when i buy some more solarez i will be trying it instead. The blush just has a soft waxy feel to it and you can make finger prints in it. this is not in the epoxy but the stuff that settles over it to cure. But besides this it is my favorite epoxy i have tried so far.
Jaw
Like This fish pirate Yesterday, 11:15 AM Great to here about your results Jaw. I'll be testing with both of those products. What kind of light set up are you using? How big are the bulbs, how many nanometers wave length, and are you turning the lures as they are curing I'm not around my shop to give you the exact wavelength for the light but it is the same uv nail light used in the alumilite video where the owner shows you how to use the product. I tried two different nail lights and the product was inconsistent in curing time and hardness with both. The alumi uv cures much slower than solarez if it cures at all. It also has a chemical smell for a long time if your lucky enough to get it cured. I experimented with curing times, different lights, different temperatures and everything else I could think of that I could control but I'm done with it it's to expensive for the hassle you go through for the inconsistent results you get
Jaw
Jrammit The lights I use are uv nail lights purchased at the local beauty supply. They work great for solarez. The benifits of using this type resin to me is that it is so much quicker than epoxy to build with when foiling baits and if you don't mind the finish coat not being as shiny as the look you get with epoxy then it speeds this up also
JRammit
What about the "beat the clock game" you have to play with epoxy?... Since you would likely be applying the UV stuff indoors, do you have infinite working time?... That could be an advantage!
jonister
As long as you DO NOT expose the resin in the can to any UV light or sun light, it will not flash off until you put it in the light. If you apply with the light on while the lid is off, or if any sunlight is getting inside your shop, it can cause the can to start to flash off. Usually only resin dripping back in will do this so i dip and let drip in, close the lid, and then use the light. The idea is to not let any light get in the can.
Jaw
I transferred some of the solarez into a smaller bottle (Brown with black top) so my main can is not exposed to uv as often. I usually brush it on then rotate the lure on my Turner for awhile to level it out. I then either place the lure in my light or if I've got time and good weather I place the lure outside. I don't use natural uv rays much though because I do more tackle tinkering in the winter and the weather is always a factor then. I do think solarez is a great product for cutting down building time but I still prefer epoxy for a final finish. I still need to try an mcu product sometime in the future , maybe next winter.
