bohmer99
Hey guys, I just started getting into this. As of now the hardest part I am having right now is finding an epoxy that is thin enough that I can work with, yet won't need a turner since I don't have one yet. I have a couple lures shaped, wired, and ready to be sealed before I paint them. I've looked over the internet and some of the threads here and it seems to me that Devcon 2 Ton (30 min) will be my best bet (please tell me if I'm wrong). And if this is the best way to go, will hanging the lure from one of the eye hooks be sufficient enough to allow the epoxy to cure? Any other suggestions are very much welcomed & appreciated!
Popular Post BobP
Until epoxy begins to harden, it will migrate due to gravity. Devcon Two Ton is one of the faster "30 minute epoxies" but it still takes about 45 minutes before it hardens enough not to migrate - and that's at 75-80 degrees. If you have no turner, you can hang the bait up and then periodically reverse it for the 45 min required. Turn it frequently, about every minute at first, then gradually less often as it begins to stiffen. Putting a wire hanger on the front and rear of the bait makes the process much easier. The exercise will teach you that a lure turner is something you want to build sooner rather than later. There are other coatings, like Solarez UV cured polyester resin, moisture cured urethanes, and concrete sealers that are basically brush on and hang up coatings. They either cure fast (uv) or are so thin (mcu and sealer) that any excess drips off the lure before they harden. But epoxy is a great coating for many reasons and if you plan to build baits in the future, a lure turner is the way to go.
saltshaker
Pretty much covered that...heh, Bob?
Musky Glenn
I have the material to build my turner but because of laziness and the fact that I can get a good finish by hanging I just keep putting off building the turner. I paint musky lures and I can only paint epoxy on one lure before it gets to thick to spread with a brush. I use Bob Smith's AeroMicro 30 min. slow-cure epoxy. I can't tell it from d2t. I use a cheap disposable brush, brush it on thin but make sure it is completely covered by holding it to a light to get a gloss reflection. I don't get any sagging unless I don't brush it out thin. It never runs down and drips at all.
bohmer99
I just put epoxy on 3 lures tonight and hung them up. Currently flipping them every 5 minutes or so and no drips. I did so thin coat Bc I plan on painting and then coating another time or two but a turner does seem much more convienent
Jaw
I don't know how you can use epoxy without a turner. The inconvienance of flipping the baits and timing it was horrible for me when I did it this way. The ability to hang the bait on the turner and walk away is great when you don't have time to babysit. Just my opinion but I believe if you build a turner you won't regret it
Musky Glenn
If you brush the finish on thin enough you can hang and forget them.
Vodkaman
I did a lot of up-ending epoxied lures, but eventually bit the bullet and built the turner - best thing I ever did. It is an easy build and I promise you won't regret it. Dave
