JDNO7
I recently started foiling my own crankbaites. My learning curve was greatly reduced thanks to all of the smart people on here that post there knowledge so thank you for that. My first try was with Some HVAC tape and boy is that a pleasure to work with. very flexible, thin and really transfers the 3D detail of the body. I Have a beautiful Holographic roll I bought off ebay very thin and it had an adhesive on the back. It isn't nearly as flexible as the foil but it could work. However the edges don't smooth well and the adhesive doesn't hold very well(the edges pull up). My question is can I apply an additional adhesive to help it stay flat? Or If I order a holographic FOIL Tape online does that mean it will have the some qualtities as the HVAC tape? I would like to make this holo roll work because its the best looking one ive found. RayburnGuy
I've used holo foil I bought online for a few baits and found the adhesive isn't nearly as strong as that found on HVAC tape or the Venture Brite Bak tape like that used on stained glass projects. What I ended up doing was removing the adhesive from the holo foil by wiping it with an acetone soaked rag and using contact cement like that used to bond Formica to counter tops. After applying the cement to both the tape and the bait and waiting for it to get tacky I applied the foil. The edges didn't want to lay completely flat so I wrapped the bait and foil tightly with nylon twine to force the edges down until the contact cement could cure enough to hold the edges down. This is a lot of extra work, but seeing as how the holo foil was thicker and stiffer than the HVAC or Brite Bak tape it was the only thing I could come up with that would make the edges of the holo foil lay down. After allowing the contact cement ample time to cure I coated the bait with epoxy to hide the edges before painting the top and bottom of the bait. Below is a picture of one of the baits I did this way. Ben
JDNO7
Thanks for the info! What I just did was relieved the edges by cutting them vertically about 1/8" every 1/8" or so to allow the material to lay flat better. Worked really well. And I stopped before the gill to avoid the 3D features. Still will be looking for a better foil tape but works for now!

Saugerman
A friend of mine let me have a piece of a roll, of the foil tape they use when installing furnaces, and air conditioners. Do you think it would work for foiling baits? I'm new to this. What do you think?
JDNO7
Yea that's what I was referring to as HVAC tape. It's very easy to work with and smooth out. Just tough to find a holographic tape that works well.
