jonister
So i have currently been using cold solarez or wood filler as my gap filler and to smooth the bait out. This is good and all but i would like to have a different product that is lighter and maybe floats. All that solarez is causing my baits to be heavy and sink or soften the action. I want to try the material used to seal cork poppers which i think is the same thing used to seal and smooth Rapalas. does anyone use this or know the product? Thanks guys!
Seeking 56
If you can't find the product you're referring to, I'd recommend this stuff. Quickwood.com I've used it as a filler and also to build up baits and haven't had any issues whatsoever. s56
Jaw
I use balsa wood filler in get at hobby town
RayburnGuy
What exactly are you guys filling? Ben
Jaw
I use the filler on the gap created when I cut the slot for my wire form if I can't clamp or press the lure down enough to get the fit I want. This is usually done when I only cut a slot for my wire form instead of cutting the lure completely into. Probably not the best way to do it but it works

This is usually done when I only cut a slot for my wire form instead of cutting the lure completely into. Probably not the best way to do it but it works Oh, OK. I quit building 100% balsa baits because I hated all the trouble of trying to get a wire through to fit properly and then epoxy everything back together while keeping it all straight. Not saying anything against this process. It's just more trouble that I wanted to go through. These days I use either 100% Paulownia or if I want a little livelier bait I use a basswood core sandwiched between two pieces of balsa. This way I can still use epoxy to fasten my line ties, hook hangers and ballast without having to worry about anything pulling out. By doing it this way I no longer have to worry about using any fillers. All holes are drilled just slightly larger than the hardware that fits in them and this provides just enough "glue gap" for the epoxy to form a strong joint. jonister
Thanks guys! i looked into both products and they both look interesting. @ Jaw, is that a thick filler or something dippable? thanks again!
mark poulson
Have you tried bondo?
jonister
No i have not. I will look into it too. It looks like it would be a good thick filler. Thanks!
Jaw
It's a thicker filler not dip able at all and you will have to do a little sanding after it dries
mark poulson
I use it, sand it to shape, and then put a drop of runny super glue onto the bondo, to strengthen it, when I use it to fill and seal my rattle holes. Otherwise, there is really no need to put glue on it before you prime your bait.
jonister
Ok thanks guys! I might go get some now. im still looking for that cork sealer stuff. Thankyou!
BobP
I cut balsa baits in half and lay in the wire form, then glue the halves back together with 5 min epoxy. When back together, there is always a little scar that runs around the perimeter of the bait. I just use Elmer's interior or exterior wood filler. The interior filler is basically like spackling compound. But it gets covered with a durable undercoating of epoxy or Solarez, plus a topcoat of epoxy - so no harm/no foul. crab05
What do you guys use on plastic baits with nicks or pointers that the paint won't fill in? I have been repainting some scuffed and nicked up bombers etc
mark poulson
I don't try to fill nicks on old plastic baits before I paint them. I just do a quick dip in clean acetone, to freshen up and clean the old paint surface, and then repaint.
