owenby
Hey everyone im new here my name is chris. Im not new to making jigs but not really modifying a mold. Im needing a bullet mold that is weedless. The 1/4 ounce would be what i would pour most. Do it has the mold it goes from 1/8-1 ounce.but they are not weedless. The ones i used to buy he would use a drill bit when they were done and he used 7 heavy action fibers from a weedguard. This to me would take forever. There has to be a way maybe to add that 1/8 base pin to that bullet mold. Any help would be greatly appreciate.
LimpNoodle
Why not just buy the Do-It 3248? http://store.do-itmolds.com/Weedless-Bullet-Bass-JigbrSz-14-38-12brHk-L2221brCollar-Ball_p_1064.html

smalljaw
If you told us which bullet mold you mean. There is a bullet jig that takes an Aberdeen hook, then you have a model that takes a heavier hook like a Gamy 604 and then you have the bullet nose jig that takes a 60 degree heavy hook like the Mustad 32786, so without knowing which mold it is hard to help you. owenby
Yes that would have been helpful. The one i want is the one that takes the heavier hook.JBS-6-A is the one i want to get
Yo Al
One cavity at a time lay a finishing nail where you want the weedguard. Close the mold and hit it with a hammer a few times. This will make a groove to use as a guide on each side of the mold. Open up the groove to fit the base pin with a file or drill. The cavities by the hinge will be harder because the hinge gets in the way. Short Teflon pins will be easier to fit and you might not be able to pour multiple cavities at one time. owenby
Yo al are you saying use a finishing nail the size of the base pin. I have a bunch of the 1/8 base pins and teflon pins laying around. If you was gonna take out the aluminum what would you use. Thanks a ton
smalljaw
Use the finishing nail, the base hole pin is too big so the mold won't close far enough to make a full mark on each side of the mold. Once you have the marks you can lay a pin down on top on them and the use it as a guide for a box cutter and simply score the mold, this will make border marks so you know how far to go width wise. Then do the same thing to the other side but the finishing nail gives you a spot to start and it will be the same on each side. Just remember to check often and take your time. Jig Man
I use my shop vice instead of a hammer. Tape the nail in place. Close the vice on the mold then tighten it to make the depression.
owenby
Awesome thanks jigman i appreciate it. One more thing deer hunter on the for sale form has a bullet mold. The one he has has 3-4 1/4s 3-4 1/8s. But i think it takes the small 1 or 2 575 style hook. What im wanting to do is make the mold weedless and take 3/0 hooks. How do i go about getting that mold take that bigger hook? The ole man we bought these from for years around here doesnt tie anymore and he always used that bullet head with a gamma 3/0. Everybody is ised to it that way and confident in them

smalljaw
All you have to do is Google the number of the mold and you'll know which one it is. I will say this, since you are modifying the mold for a weed guard, why not just get the heavy hook model and it will be 1 less thing. You also have to know which hook the ones you had before used, and not just a brand. For example, Gamakatsu makes a 111 and a 604 or Owner, you have the 5318 super needle point which is a light wire hook and the 5313 which is a short shank heavy wire hook. Most Do-it molds will accept a larger or smaller hook than the cavity size states, if it calls for a 2/0 you can usually get a 3/0 in with no modification. As for knowing the molds, go to Barlows Tackle and look under lead molds, there are heavy hook and regular hook models and then there are the hooks themselves, they have them listed by style or brand, I suggest going by style so you can find exactly what you need. I don't know what you are using these heads for but you don't always need the FG-30 weed guard, you can go with the FG-12 which is 5/64" and what most of use do is buy some 5/64" steel rod from speedy metal in 304 stainless and then cut small pins and then you'll have a lighter weed guard. Or use a finishing nail alone and it will give you enough for the FG-9 weed guard which is 1/16". I pour small ball head jigs that use FG-9 and FG-12 weed guards that I tie hair jigs with, so going with a smaller weed guard is another option. On my molds that aren't weedless, I will make the heads for hair jigs and use a product called a "slide-off weed guard, just look it up, they work very well at making jigs weedless. Yo Al
Sorry I didn't get back sooner. These guys cleared up the process. I agree with smalljaw on the smaller guards too.
owenby
Id like to do the small weedguard like 1/16. If i do this right when i pour these what can i use for the weedguard hole? Im thinking i can use the finish nail? Thanks for all your help. That mold on barlows for 1/4 says 1/0 hook
Jig Man
I use pieces of copper from romex 12 ga. for the smaller holes.
