Hard Bait Help From A Fly Guy

Ben, i was thinking the same thing... Just not enough friction to hold this knot... I was ready to give up and consider another solution

But now look at this!!!

1) 10 twists with the mono

2) dab of superglue where i want the thread

3) 10 tight wraps with thread

4) dab superglue

5) cut thread tag

6) 20 wraps toward screw eye

7) 20 wraps away from screw eye

B) coat with superglue

9) cut off thread spool

10) test

11) PASS!!!!!

Didnt even use epoxy this time, but i liked the look on the last one... So ill add step 12 epoxy

HA!!!! In your face thread spool!!!

In my excitement, i left a couple of details out:

The mono is twisted TIGHT!... So tight that the loop closes on the screw eye... Use a tooth pick to pull the loop open before dabing superglue

The thread wrap will not cover all the twists in the mono... Once finished, untwist the left over mono and cut off

Another few things to try;

1 - Wrap a base before making the loop. This should add more friction grip area.

2 - pull the mono end to be wrapped through some fine emery, say 600 grit. Yes, this will effectively weaken the mono, but the load is shared 50:50 so will still be stronger than your main line. This will increase the friction grip and give extra key for the epoxy.

3 - as you are wrapping the loop, occasionally, wrap a few behind the tag end. This breaks up the straight out pull.

4 - After wrapping the loop, double the tag end back and wrap back another ten wraps or so, trim the tag and wrap clean.

One or all of these should improve the situation.

I considered a base wrap, but didn't think of roughing up the surface... Good idea!

I had even tried twisting the mono once before (another failure)... But i saw a YouTube clip about the bimini knot..... That's where i got the idea for tighter twists and pulling the loop back for even more tension

I think im happy with this knot... The water jugs are still hanging... Figure ill just let em hang tonight, if i wake up to a wet floor, ill consider a few tweaks

It certainly is not impossible, you just keep on piling on the ideas until it works.

The pull test is severe, but it gives a lot of confidence at the water.

I am going to add a new pull test when I get things moving again; the Shock test. The numbers still to be determined, but basically dropping the mass through a height of 1 meter. Again, this is a brutal test, designed to give confidence in your build. Best performed outdoors as it could get messy.

Test such as this may be brutal Dave, but if they survive the test then there should be no problem in the field.
