woodieb8
hi guys. I have been molding 16lb foam, good results. my question. has anyone used 26lb urethane foam molding baits?
Vodkaman
I haven't used it, but it must be all good. For a start, the foam expansion will be less, causing less mold problems. The specific gravity is 0.417 which is still very good and the strength will be amazing. Dave
mark poulson
What does the lb rating of the foam mean?
Vodkaman
Mark - the Lb rating indicates the weight of a cubic foot of the foam. A little mathematic manipulation and you can find the specific gravity. This is useful because it is relative to water which has an SG=1. woodieb8
we are looking for a little more density but still achieve a moderate flotation, with hardware on the bait. with my new mold design the tail half is less in diameter. that's why we have asked. along with density,,strength and wired thru. although its only a 7 inch lure for predators we need maximum strength.thats what led me to 26lb foam instead of 16lb densitys.. on our 10 inch bait 16lb has done very well in test,,catching and durability. mark poulson
Do you have to through wire your foam baits?
woodieb8
yes we use s/s wire 0.51 thru wire on all molded lures. I sent smooth-on a question on shore density, awaiting a reply.
mark poulson
Woodie, Is that just to keep the hardware from pulling out, or does the wire make the bait stronger?
woodieb8
the wire thru method makes a constant bait build. screws are good but with cost and durability we use s/s wire on all lures.. on urethane foam yes it does give added strength.
